ok i need gears soon but i don't know what i want. I have a 92 yota pickup with a 22re 5spd and stock transfer case on 35s. I have stock 4.10s and yes they suck. My truck is VERY slow and underpowered. This truck is my DD so i don't want to loose my good mpg and i don't want a top speed of 55 mph. I know most people would say 5.29s but i also have heard they wear faster because of how small the pinion gear is. Some people say 4.88s will be a good medium, but others say i won't really notice the difference. I do moderate wheeling (will have rear locker soon) and trail riding, but remember this is also my DD and i have to be able to drive to the interstate if needed. I may regear my transfer case one day, but lets stick with axle gearing for now.
opinions/experiences please

33s for the road and 35s for the trail would be a heck of a lot easier on drive train while you are DDing it.

google some gear calculaters and check out some numbers. I have 4.56 and 35s with an auto. 33s were not good for me on the because of lockers taht I installed. Also an auto transmission robs low end as well. Its better to have the gear and not need it than to need it and not have it.

With 5:29s you will be turning more rpms, but that is where your 4cyl works the best, and your foot will not be flat on the floor the entire time you are driving. In the end your fuel mileage will not be bad.You also can pull hills in 5th instead of 3rd.Once you drive with 5:29s you will not go back to 4:10s.

I`m running 33`s. It`s not my DD but it does see a good bit of road time. Went from 4:10`s to 5:29`s and it made a world of difference in pulling hills. I used to have to shift from 5th down to 3rd to make it up a small hill.
