Well I now know why no one installs ring and pinions, just to get the proper tools to install them is more then what it would cost me to pay someone else to do it.

I had planned to install my gears myself because I have always been curious how to do it. I don't think the actual task of installing them would be bad but to shell out $4-500 for the proper tools I will only use once is crazy. Then there is no guarantee I'll do it right and I won’t have a warranty for the install. So I have conceded gears are not for the back yard mechanic.

I guess I'll be making a trip back to ECGS Monday or Tuesday and drop my axles off to the professionals and let them handle it.

My first few sets were installed with regular shop tools. It can be done, but having the right tools sure does make it a whole lot easier. If you don't plan on doing it that often, Definatley go the ECGS route.

Harbor Freight. Bought all the tools I needed for less than $125 including the press. Still ended up paying jeepinmatt to do it because I botched it up and broke a set of gears. Had I realized there was a carrier break in the d30 I probably could have done it myself! :D Thats what I get for not doing proper homework though.

I think Olivers was offering a $200 special on gear setup?

You could get away with using something like white lithium grease on the pinion to setup gears on a trail rig.

Wouldn't do it for anything street driven though.

ECGS (Chase)
Oliver's (Dave)
Right Side Performance (Will Carter)
Carolina Truggies (Alex)
Wilson Offroad (Keith)

I'm pretty sure all these guys can help you out for fair prices

Thats my problem this is not strictly a trail rig. It isn't a DD either but both my wife and I like taking it out on the highway on nice days and just going for ride.

That is what made me decide not to do it my self I need the gears to be 100% right becasue I don't trailer it any where. If it goes to the trail we drive it there. Since I am doing a HP up grade in the front and Disc conversion in the rear both axles are already tore down so I am sure I will get a good price for the gear install.

Bring it on......we will take care of it for you Monday or Tuesday if you want.

i know a guy who owns a exhaust shop that said he would charge me 100 to set up my dana 30...new bearings and seals with the ring and pinion..im weary of it but dont want to spend 400 bucks at 4 wheel parts

Anyone know a place that will install front and rear lockers/ring and pinion for fairly cheap? and ACTUALLY do it right?
