I would be posting in the axle section but since im a nube to this forum i gess ill post here.

i just picked up a hp30 axle out of a 94 Cherokee, with 355 gears, my stock d30 has 373 gears, i plan 2 re-gear both my axles to 456. but for the time being can i run the 355 with my 373? i have a 231 transfer case so i plan to only use 4wd on the beach, only on the beach. do you think ill be safe with the different gearing? just wondering what yaw think. from my oppion i think ill be ok, i just want a few more oppions. thanks guys

alright thats what i thought. i appreciate it. thank god i swapped out that 249 tcase.. any other opinions? anyone ever tryed this, and had no problems?

Me, I wouldn't. I would wait and swap the axle once I had it regeared. Why the rush to get the hp30 on?

I wouldn't do it either...but you could swap up tire sizes (one size up front and one size in the rear) to get the same effective ratio front and rear and then you'd be fine.

The main issue you will have that the Front will be slower than the rear. I have seen guys run different ratios front to rear to gain traction, I even believe Ford did it for a few years. As long as its under 10% difference between the axles. Now the set up that your looking at will be hard on the drive train due to the rear trying to push the front along.

Honestly the difference is minimal between 3.55 and 3.73 (.18), But hard surfaces will not be your friend.

I am going to have to agree with everyone else, I would hold off until you get the gears matching.

Point blank, don't do it.

Also, when you go to do the gear swap on the HP D30, don't forget to upgrade your carrier. The D30 has a carrier break at 3.73 and up. (Requires a different carrier.) I made that mistake and shattered a new 4.56 yukon set in 5 minutes. You "MAY" be able to use the carrier out of your current/stock D30. I don't know if there is a difference in the carrier on a HP vs LP. I kind've doubt there is since Chase only sells one carrier and doesn't specify if it's LP/HP.

However, if in doubt, ECGS has a great deal on the carrier you need:

thats cood to know about the carrier i never knew that. i know i cant use the carrier out of my stock 30, cause the hp has reverse cut ring and pinion. so i gess my best bet for rite now is hit up the picknpull in va beach and get a ring and pinion + carrier with 3.73 gears. thanks for the info

Carriers are the same in HP vs LP and there is a break in them both as Chris stated. If you have 3.73s in your LP30 you could use it in the HP with 4.56s. When ordering your gears just remember to order reverse cut gears.

one more question, i have the d44a out back would any d44 gears work in the aluminum housing? when i do the gearing outback of course im gonna truss it and get the hd diff cover, would 456 gears be safe to use in the alum housing?

thanks all of u guys helping me with this i really appreciate all of your help and advice.

You may want to call Chase on that one. I know corvettes and vipers with the aluminum d44 center section run different gears than a standard 44.

Search around on NAGCA.com, it is a grand cherokee only site. In short, the 44a is a very unique axle, and has minimal aftermarket support. the 44a has very little in common with its iron 44 cousin. I am not certain whether iron 44 gears will work in the 44a, I do know that iron 44 lockers do not work in 44a axles.

also will the spider gears in the lp30 work with the hp30? im just trying to make sure before i do the carrier swap

dont do it man, sand may allow enough slippage but is it really worth the chance? plus if you dont have lock out hubs your Tcase is spinning even in 2wd, not good!
id jus be patient and wait till its all the same
jus too much bind on the drive train
