whats around the normal price to have 4.56 or any other gear installed, and can anyone recommend a place to go either in raleigh or charlotte

on a solid axle, Andy at CRS normally runs around $250 in labor...less if you bring just the axle and he doens't have to deal with the vehicle itself...

Greg

That's the same price as other shops. Just for argument sake, I have seen regular shops charge less than "4x4" shops for this type of work.

keep in mind, the level of service you'll get from Andy will be better than most.

Oh sh!t here we go again. Andy is the only person in the whole state that can change a gear in a 4x4 professionally. To answer the original question, there are regular mechanics who will charge less.

no he isnt the only one but if i couldnt do it i sure as shit would take it there to be done. whats wrong u got sand in your pussy today and need to talk shit to a happy customer?

I love it. I was wondering how long it would take. Just trying to get a rise out of somebody on a boring Sunday. Andy does do excellent work, but I'm just stating there are other good shops and he is a extremely busy guy. Hey man I'm still loving the cage he put in 4 days ago! Just answering the guy's question. I can't believe it took 30 minutes for a response like this! Now that you mention it let me go flush this thing out...
Before somebody else chimes in...
1. I don't (nor do I know anybody who does) do work professionally
2. I wouldn't charge less than the $250 if I did!

strange, if u like your cage then why even make a comment like that? it doesnt take long when u make stupid comments

about 7 years ago I before I got the garage/time/tools to do my own work I paid $180 to have gears professionally set up in an XJ. Hope this helps you out MILESHIGH.
Why even make a comment like that? I knew somebody like you would jump all over it.
Now if he had asked where to get a sweet cage installed... well thats another story.

It was good for about an hours entertainment Thanks

7 years ago a coke was 45 cents, but i guess wrench time prices dont go up.

yeah i will jump all over a comment like that as long as chris, mazer, and andy are still there. go back and read the first question. dude wants the name of a shop and we recomended one. i am supprised if you like someones work so much that you would make a tounge in cheek comment like that.

Not exactly sure what flat rate time for gear change is, but I believe it is right at 4 hours (per axle), to which that $250 would be $62.50 an hour.

Dealerships range from $70-$110hr (some even more) for labor rates, most independent shops are about $65-$100hr labor depending on the service and/or brand.

Labor rates were MUCH different 7yrs ago ($45hr), the rates have gone up, even if the work stayed the same.

$250 per axle is reasonable, and I'd rather pay the experianced guy that does a few swaps a month than the dude who does it once a year when the chance arises.

I don't know any of the involved parties in this piss'n match, but experiance tells me looking for the bottom dollar here isn't nessesarly the best way to go.

lets lighten up a bit

Kevin

You guys are right about the price probably. I am trying to make the argument that 4x4 shops are not the only place that do gears. Is that fair? There were a lot of gears changed before "rockcrawling" became cool
I'll be here til midnight, and I'm really, really bored...

4X4 Shops are usaully more tailored to doing the lower gear ratios in which it may be hard to get a good contact pattern. Race car guys usually set their gears up "looser" than something you want to get some mileage out of. The racer guys usually charge out the ying yang too.

Kevin Watts(919-818-8140) in Raleigh did mine 2 years ago. Both axles for $325. DC4wd.com hooked me up with him(best prices around). I bought the gears from DC and Kevin installed them so they are under warranty. Kevin is super nice guy with mad skills.

Quality work for a good price. I'm a price whore. :D

Dupree's machine shop in Angier "Tim Harmond" did mine for $150 labor/ each but took him 2-3 weeks to get to each one I brought in seperately. He only takes axles and not vehicles. He does excellent work. Busier than He!! though - especially during race season.
I did my own 14 bolt.
I'd say Kevin's got my dude beat if you consider turn around time.

I would never let a regular mechanic touch any gears of mine it is hard enought to find some one that can do it and know that it willl not blow up few miles down the road. sure Andy is not the only guy that does a good job, there are several Others around. Kevin Watts does good work also in the raliegh area. Gears are not something that I would take a chance with. I have done them myself with sucess but will never do it again it is to much of a PITA do deal with.

This is amazing......why can't people just leave me out of their BS. All the worthless BS is stupid.

MILESHIGH......if I can help you call me. I will be happy to take care of setting you up.

We typically charge $250/axle in the truck and $150/axle out. Some front axles will be more depending on condition........if I spend 2 additional hours tearing down a rusted to hell 60 you are gonna pay for it......it is only fair.

Other than that, let me know if I can help you out and I will be happy to.

Watts also does an excellent job if you are looking for it to be done up in Raleigh.

Depending on parts, etc., our typical turn around on a gear setup is 1-2 days.

Hey I'm curious 'cause I don't know, do you mean 4 hours including removing the axle/third, or just workin' on it time if you bring in the third by itself? I'd like to do this and cut my costs down w/ as much work as I can do on my own.

It really depends whether the shop goes by flat rate or not. That is why we do it at 150/250 - out or in. You do more of the work and it is less I have to deal with so it is cheaper.........

It all depends on where you do it though, lots of places charge $250 no matter whether it is in or out....
