Do i need to change out the carrier on a 10 bolt front or 12 bolt rear if I'm switching from 3.08 to 4.10? I heard a rumor that I do.

You dont HAVE too you could run the cheater gears. I know Richmond makes them and I'm sure others do too.

But it would be better to change it out, right? I'm cheap, but I want this done right.

The cheater gear is just a thick gear that takes up the extra space on the carrier. I wouldnt worry about a thick gear set as much as I would the crush sleve and C clips.

10 Bolts are not 1 tons, but there are essentially ZERO difference between a 10bolt and a 12/Dana 44

This has been beat to death on PBB and elsewhere.
There is a marginal difference in Pinion shaft diameter and it is offset by a difference in bearing surface IIRC

Again a 10 Bolt aint bullet proof. But it is AS STRONG IF NOT STRONGGER than a D44 stock for stock.

Think of it this way, GM replaced the D44 with the 10bolt, manufacturers arent in the habit of replacing parts with inferior ones. (I know there are exceptions here but this isnt one)

But I have been running an open 10b for 1.5 years on 38.5s...
I have a 60 sitting and being slowly built for when it fails (cause I KNOW it wil) but so far have been lucky.

I also met a guy on here and ck5 running a 10 bolt w/42s and had no problems.

I AM NOT SAYING IT IS ADVISABLE. JUST DONE.

Now to answer your questions. As plentiful and available as 10s are why spend the extra on a 1off gear set?
you can pick these up literally for free if you look.
Just get one and have it built while you run your current.
I have regeared a 10bolt in the past, but wont again. You will spend ~500-750 between gears crush sleeves, bearings seals etc spend that on the build up of the 1tons...unless this is for a street queen. Then re gear away

Dont downgrade? Really, explain going from the 9" to the 8.8, explain going from live axle 44 hp's to that POS 44TTB. How about the old 12 botl rear to the nice flexiflyer POS 10 bolt rear? Bullshit an manufactor isn't in the habit of "downgrading", the manufactor is into saving money. Period, if a cheaper option that met the basic specs required from a manufactor was available at that time, thats is what would be under there.

10 bolt is marginally weaker than the 44, your right. However, the ones I've seen break have pulled the balljoints out. Never seen that in a 44 myself. While a 44 is not nessasarily a upgrade per say at least it is a move in the right direction. Yes, I've seen huge tires on both and some of them got beat pretty hard and stayed together. I blew a knuckle off a 44 grenading a outer with 35's. The CTM looked good though.

Of course I think MOGS would be a better choice either way. Or rockwells if you like really big shit. :flipoff2:

I was wondering how long this would take. I'm building a 10 bolt cause I could never find one with 4.10 gears in it or anything close. Plus I already have this one as my spare, and the 12 bolt rear as a spare too. And another 14 bolt coming. I know I don't want to really invest this kind of money into it, but I have found no other option. It's not going to be the strongest right now, but it's not going to be built for rockcrawling anyway. maybe later I can turn it into a Bluggy (blazer-buggy) but I just want this thing geared, and then I'm going to work on my motor. I personally have found no great benefit of D44, I had them under the waggy, and they went to crap after a year. I would love to find a D60 front, but nothing yet. If anyone has a D60 geared 4.10 or close I would give some money for it and not worry about my 10 bolt. This is only running 35's right now and I don't anticipate going bigger. So I hope my 10 bolts last. Thanks for the advice though. I'll probably remember it when I'm cussing on the side of a trail.

Okay so now I've completely changed my mind. da hell with some gears for now. I'll just keep the ones on there, just fix the pinion seals. I'll get my 14 bolt and try to find a Dana 60 front. And just work on my motor in the meantime. I appreciate the help, I was about to go offroad in the trail of financiallity. <--its a word look it up. I also need a 205. I've got a 208 and a 203 and I don't want either one. Since I change my mind on an hourly basis, I'll keep you posted.
