Today for the end of my semester in geology our professor who is a professional mine engineer took us out on a little day trip in Virginia to go to a large shut down limestone mine and use what we learned to identify characteristics in rock. Snapped some pictures. Obviously there was no light inside but I got some cool pictures from a connecting mine that was just next door to the larger section of the mine.
This first picture is a sink hole where one section of the mine failed and collapsed. It was pretty damn deep.
Entrance to the mine. It was about 15 degrees cooler as you approached the entrance.
Leaving the mine.
And the pictures from here on are just a side mine where they mined below a large rock shelf and the columns the miners left are still supporting it. I got really excited because there were atv tracks everywhere and some of the boulders crumbling down shaped up some nice rock obstacles but it is all private property obviously.
