Getting a title

Do you know the last owner? If so just apply for a lost title.

There is a form at the DMV, forget the #, but it is an application for a lost title or duplicate title, takes about 2-3 weeks to get it back.

100% best way to do it is to go to the tag office and ask exactly what you have to do. Once you do it, go back to the same person and finish it up.

If the 'lost' title was not in your name then it sounds like you were in a similar situation as me and I had to get an indemnity bond on the vehicle, then file for a new title. PITA. If the 'lost' title was in your name then you can file for a lost title and that's easy.

IIRC, lost title app has to be done by the current title holder.

lots of MV folks use a company called Broadway...google "Broadway Title Service" and you'll find it. Some states are shutting out title services, be sure you can transfer their title in NC.

That's the key. If its not then you'll have to get an indemnity bond and its a whole different story. Been there done that.

Can you tell more about this process. Im in a similar situation with my rig. Owner gave me a BOS and would not go get a duplicate title for the jeep done.

Not sure about this but I have also heard if you put a lein on the vehicle and it is not paid by the person you will be sent a title after a certain amount of time...Not sure if that is true or not

In my situation: the PO bought the Jeep from a girl that gave him the title (did not sign it over for whatever reason) and he could not contact her after the sale. He sold it to me and gave me the paper title and a BOS.

I went to the tag office and they gave me paperwork and affidavit to sign. I then took that paperwork to an insurance agent and got an indemnity bond for 1.5x the DMV's determined value of the Jeep. I then returned the paperwork and proof of indemnity bond to the tag office and an application for a title was sent. I got tag and registration at that time too. Got the title in the mail a few weeks later.

That's about all I can tell ya. If you have never had the title in your name then you have to go this route in NC. I like SC titling laws...or lack thereof. NC is a biooootch.

Again, the best thing to do is to go to the tag office and ask. I'm not the professional, they are, and it'll save you a lot of time getting the straight facts for your particular situation from them.

If you live in the area I would recommend the tag office in Gastonia next to ToysRus, off exit 21?. They are sharp.

Thanks for the help...I will check into this deeper. I thought I was just shit out of luck since the PO won't help me out any. I even drove up to the mtns, took a day off work because he said he would take care of it and then didn't when I got there.

I got the indemnity bond from my auto insurance guy. Some say they don't do it cause they don't really make any $ off them, but most can get one for you. I think it cost me around $100 and it was for a $3000 bond (from what I remember).

if you can get a hold of the po it is easy and cheap. they can just sign the nc mvr-4. that way its signing it over to you just like the orig. title.

thanks again russ, i guess this is what i have to do. car dude the guy is MIA and i think it'd be more trouble getting ahold of him and getting him to do that then anything else.
