Getting mixed info on what trans I can put in my ZJ

So what's the answer?

I have a '93 ZJ Laredo 4.0 with automatic and np231 t-case.

What trans can I put in between that 4.0 and 231?

I keep seeing transmissions for XJs and keep wondering if they will work. Currently looking at a '92.

Either an Aw4 (best option) or an AX-15.

the AX-15 is a 5 speed so if you don't have a clutch pedal you'll need to install one and that components that go with it. Including a different brake pedal.

the AW4 is the best Auto Jeep used in the ZJ's any other IS NOT worth it.
 
My 93 came with the AW4, so far so good.

OK. Thank you. Did the AW4 come in the ZJ? What else came in the XJs besides the AW4?

My trans still does OK, but if I need a trans and can't hold out for an AW4, will other XJ transmissions work?

I like the idea of the AX-15, I've only ever seen one ZJ with a manual. Does the pedal assembly from an XJ work in a ZJ? Is it a cable or fluid clutch?

I haven't looked for the tag on mine yet. I just know that it "slips" in first. Though not a regular slip, if you give it more gas it goes away. If I'm just above idle it acts like it's trying to jump into 2nd and missing, but if I just give it more gas it goes just fine.

Are there solenoids in this trans or something?

I'm glad you're having good experiences with your 42RE, but I've have 3 and all three sucked. Add to that, I've heard stories of SEVERAL others crapping out. In my book, it's just not worth it if you're going to swap it out. Put an aw4 in it.

yes the AW4 came in ZJ's, but only in the Early '93 models. you'll be hard pressed to find one from a ZJ. As for the XJ's, as far as I know, all the Auto's in the XJ's were AW4's. But don't quote me on that.
 
I was wrong, I have the AW4. My shfter has 1-2, 3, D as the selectable gears, which is actually the AW4, not the 42RE.

I guess for once this is a nice surprise huh?
