OK, so I am going wheeling again this weekend, had a few things to get done.
The Van has been wanting to run hot on the long up hills. I had already Changed the coolant, and added a fan shroud. So since it wasn't functional, I tool out the AC condenser or what ever it's called in front of the radiator. Doing so, had to pull radiator. IT has lines in it from the tranny and then up to a cooler. Or course one of the lines broke, off to the parts store for the second time. Got fittings and new line. Went back home 14 miles, threads right, but because the way they are made wouldn't work. Back to parts store. Found something that would work, but it wasn't in a bag with a bar code, so I asked Mike (MGR at Advance in Morganton) how much, he said if it ain't in a bag, it's free! (he knew I had already spent a couple hundred$$ already that day) Back home, bending the tube I pinched it, oh well, cut and some fuel line over it. I think this is the low pressure side( I hope) and it will be fine.
Changed oil in Van, added some slick 50. Filled radiator up with new coolant and added some water wetter. Hope all this pays off. Sucks having to run heater to keep it under 250*
Tail lights not working, so, I searched for culprit, seems to be the headlight switch it's self. No time and funds depleted, I run it to a toggle switch and now have tail lights and trailer lights too.
The Jeep developed a squeak last time out, so I changed a U-joint, of course it was a bastard joint, and hard to get, at least hard to get someone who understands. This time I had the old box, with a number, new guy at advance couldn't cross it, so Mike to the rescue again, he goes to the book, yeah they have em, few know how to use em.
Had a shock take a beating and looked like a boomerang, so replaced with an old one I had took off.
Found a couple loose bolts, and tightened all of them.
Also last trip out, my master cylinder went dry, no brakes. had some fluid in the floor, and on fire wall. Filled it and run all day Sunday last trip. Was gonna replace, but no one had it, so, I figure keep track of it through out the day, went to fill it, and it was full. I am thinking maybe the gasket was not on right and it spilled out on some of those steep hills.
the trailer didn't have brakes last time, so I took a look and went to Redneck Trailer in Lincolnton and got 4 new backing plates with brakes and all. Seemed I only needed one, so now I have three spares. Also learned there is a right and left side, duhhhh!
So all of this and I still have things on my list. I work the next 2 days and leave Friday. I figure I will knock a few off the list every day, and I will be ready to go.
Fun Fun Fun Funny how it seems so much piles up you have to get done to go play!

I *totally* feel your pain. Trip after trip to the parts store and wrapping up the day with unfinished items on the todo list is par for the course in my garage. All you need to do in burn yourself and you could write a blog for me. :)

Sounds like your radiator / water pump aren't cutting the mustard...

I feel your pain otherwise...

I love this!!! I know someone else here working my schedule and can now understand what I go through trying to get stuff together to go out of town every other wknd. Work piles up quick when you're working 12hr shifts.

Luckily I didn't have any major issues to deal with after this past trip. So I put some air in the tires and spent today joyriding in the jeep and visiting friends I hardly ever get to see anymore.

I just got back from WV, next is Harlan, then PA.........

Here's to ya Chip:beer:

Doesn't that van have a 460 in it?

I'd bet you're dealing with the wrong radiator (esp with the missing shroud), missing the oil cooler (or it's just fawked), or something similar. Those motors were always a bit on the fringe as far as keeping them cool at hwy speeds, and stuffing them up in the tiny little van bay doesn't help things any.

YEah Shawn, it does have a 460, and it does have the right radiator. Though it may need replaced, but certainly the right one. I guess screaming RPMS, pulling around 8K up a 7-9% grade it's not up to task. Absolutly no problem at all cooling otherwise.

Chip, Im assuming your runnin a tranny cooler? If not, adding one of them may help, as well as a engine oil cooler.... and/or maybe an electric pusher fan in front of the rad, to aid in what you already have....

you could also try putting in a 180 deg thermostat, because it probly has a 195 in it now (unless youve changed it)

YEs running a tranny cooler. But running an oil cooler. Gonna see how all this works before I put a pusher fan on, but it may happen.
It runs 180* dead on until I start a hard pull.

If I may Chime in, Chip...

I had a hotrod Duster once that only overheated on the highway. Turned out that the radiator was mostly plugged inside!

I would advise against a pusher, as a pusher blocks more of the radiator than it cools.

Is the Fan electric? IF not, Clutch okay, something in the shroud seal changed? If Electric, is it back away from the Radiator about a 1/2" to 1"?

Odd things you might check, if your sure Radiator is not plugged, inside or outside. Especially if this just started
Bad thermo. Jus remove and see.
Hoses collapsing
Mixture goin lean on ya?
Intake leaks....will lean engine
Timing or timing chain got advanced
Plug heat range WAY too hot
Head gasket leaking
(These can all be check by havin a look at the plugs)
Is trans cooler internal to the Radiator? Is it heating up?
Main bearing starting to go

Jus some ideas
Scott

A pusher won't help... airflow into the rad isn't your problem, that much is for sure. (Not like a pusher would help above 10mph anyway)

It should have a ~12x8" stacked plate oil cooler from the factory. Ties in at the oil filter boss.

Well, The trip to Harland and back was uneventful for the most part. Engine ran about 30* cooler on the long up hill pulls. Most it ever got to was 230* and that was only twice. Once on Old Fort Mnt, and once on 25E North. Both were very long steep pulls. So all in all I was happy with that. Still wanna have the Radiator check out, and see if it helps.
