Getting rid of cable

If you live around Raleigh, TWC is getting ready to boost your internet speed by a LOT, for no charge. It's because Google fiber is being rolled out here.
Competition=lower rates.

I cut TV off and we only have TWC internet now. Their internet is really hard to beat. Uverse surely doesn't, and neither does any form of DSL. It's the one thing they rule at.

There are options for watching TV. Sling is one of them. Others are in the pipeline. Sony has one that looks really good, but not available everywhere yet.

I will say, after you've not had their TV service for a month or so, TWC starts getting really aggressive on their pricing in trying to get you to come back. Haven't taken an offer from them, yet, but I might when football season rolls around.

You can get full duplex residential gigabit with Uverse.

Yeah, they talked me into a bundle when we moved. For higher up/down speeds and a 33% price drop, I couldn't turn it down. The cable TV box isn't even hooked up, though.

Well, I done went and done it. TWC still sucks though. When I called to drop the TV and home phone, they told me that the standard internet (15Mbs) was $57 something. I was on their website that showed standard at $34.99. New customers only blah blah blah. Uverse in my area is $45 for 18Mbs. Kept telling them that I would switch to uverse for that price. Ended up getting the extreme package 30Mbs for $45.

Bought my own router - Surfboard 6141
Bought a ROKU3 for the living room
Bought 2 MOHU leaf 30s for living room and bedroom.
Hooked up the Wii in the bedroom for netflix, amazon prime instant video, hulu.

With all the extra initial expense of buying stuff, I will break even at the end of the year. Then I will be saving around $60 each month. AND I can watch what I want, when I want.

Just think, in 2 years I can afford to put a roll cage on my yota for what I am saving!

It will definately take a little getting used to. I can really see that I will like it. My wife is still a little skeptical. She was addicted to the DVR. I explained that she wont need DVR since everthing she recorded can be streamed. I give it a week and she will be happy.

Cut off the cable a long time ago. Just this past weekend I was in Boone and my friends had the big cable/internet package from Charter. Even with all those effing channels, they still spend most of their time on OnDemand. So really no different than Netflix, Hulu, etc. Except they pay about $150 a month and I pay $65. Granted, sometimes the streaming isnt the same quality, but thats never been some huge deal to me.

Tell her if she really wants a DVR she can buy one. There are standalone units.
Or go the HTPC route and DVR is built in.

I cant really see the need of a DVR since everything we watch can be streamed whenever we want to watch it.

You mentioned gettng antennas, I assumed that was for live broadcast TV.

Yep, about all we get is the main news channel we watched on cable. We get a couple movie channels that show mostly 70s movies and westerns. I'm not complaining one bit. I grew up on 7 channels and I'm only 33.

Cydney asked me last night if "we still get network tv". Well, I never hooked the antennas up after we moved, so that's not going to work. However, they did give us a bundle package for basic cable when we set up the cable modem. I just needed to find the little converter box and hook it up. Found an HDMI cable, hooked it up, let it scan for channels, only to have it tell me that my service had been interrupted and I needed to call customer service.

So, I went up in the attic, mounted both antennas, terminated the cables, hooked them to the splitter, went back downstairs, hooked up the amp, and told the TV to rescan for channels. Within a few minutes, I had 20-some channels of crap that we can now watch in addition to all of the internet tv we've been watching for the last two months.

Plus those 20 channels of crap are now digital and in HD and you can hit "info" to see what's on, and "guide" to see what's coming up (verbage may be different on yours but you get the idea).
