Goferit tie rod flip

My buddy has bought a tie rod flip kit from Goferit and he wants the inserts welded to the knuckle. Is this necessary and won't the knuckle need to be heated before welding?
 
It is neccesary to weld them. I didn't pre-heat my knuckles and they are holding up just fine.
 
What did you use? MIG, Stick? I assume this step is just to prevent the inserts from turning in the holes.
 
I've mig'ed several of them, all are holding up fine. Just drill it, tap it in with a rubber mallet, run a bead around it, don't get any slag on the inside.
