Gonna get cold as,....well, it's gonna get REAL cold

Don't forget your pets, next two nights are not a time to leave them outside.

What are you doing with the chickens? Running a heat lamp? Sometimes chickens with big combs will get frostbite on their heads when it gets this cold.

From my research, don't need to do a lot for the chickens. They will roost in the top of the condo. There is a light bulb in there to get some heat off of, and it's sealed except for the door, so the wind won't bite them.

That's the same for me Chip. I haven't ever had one freeze up, but I don't recall seeing record cold temps like this either. The biggest pain is swapping out the water that freezes.

Will put heat lamp on mine also tonight. Probably in my well house also.

scared to death!!!!!

Unhooked my water hoses, closed the foundation vents, checked the antifreeze in the Jeeps. M715 was rated about 15*, added as much antifreeze as I had room for...close enough. The CJ5, on the other hand....radiator is about 20 years old....as it warmed up...more antifreeze was running out of the radiator than thru the motor...time for a new radiator. Home that one had enough antifreeze in the mix, can't get any in the block now. Grrrr.

I was going to post up about checking your antifreeze temp level too.

How long is the "safe" life on those plug in pipe heat strips? Just found one and plugged it in under the house. Looked to be in good shape and heated quickly. The pervious owner had put in.

I hope my chickens in the run are smart enough to go in their barrel. If not oh well. I've got three month old dibs in the coupe w/ it all blocked up so hopefully they will be alright. Still having to keep them seperated.

I will probably have all kinds of burst pipes tomorrow in my rental houses but I've done everything I can to prevent it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I put electric heaters in 2 of three well houses. Bad thing is the one w/o a heater is my well. But I don't think it will freeze. It's small and close to the ground and hard to get the roof off to put a heater in so I'm hoping for the best there.
I like cold weather but not this figging cold.

you got to watch out for them "pervious" owners, its probly wired to a bedroom camera too!!

scared to death!!!!!

They just cancelled school for tomorrow. Supposed to be 3 degrees tonight, and 8-9 when kids would be waiting for the bus w/ wind chill in the -15 range. The wind here is already crazy.

just out of curiosity what is a "normal" freezing temp for 50/50 coolant? its -3 here and dropping, it sucks

50/50 is ~ -37°F, 225° coolant boil over

70/30 is ~ -65°F ~ 235° boil over thats 70% antifreeze to 30% water, overkill for most of us.

...and what about the more likely 30/70? o_O
I'm sitting here thinking the 4runner hasn't been cranked in about 4 months, flushed in 3 years, and I have no idea what's in it but it's likely to be 45% water, 35% antifreeze, 10% mud and 10% rust....

Hm better go check the pickup.
At least I know our cars are good, they get regular maintenance as DDs. :D
