Good idea or not?

Is it a good idea to drive up trees in a National Forest?

I've been asked by another member of the board to start this poll. He thinks it's cool to drive up trees while at national forests (uwharrie) to flex his suspension and attemt to show off. As I told him, driving up trees is OK in my book if it's on private (your own) property. But in a National Forest with lots of people watching (although I am sure most of them thought it was cool), I don't think it's very smart (pictures always find their way online).

So, vote, and post your opinions on this. This specifically relates to driving up trees in national forests, not on private property.

Wish I had gotten a picture of his rig (maybe license plate # too?) to send to the rangers so they could mail him a ticket....

what an idiot

how far up the tree did you see him drive? i prob would have parked my rig and went over to him and pulled him out of tha seat what an idiot:driver:

Not cool...unless he parked on a limb, then Id forgive him simply for the cool factor

Thats not being bark friendly. If the trails are clearly marked and the tree is in the trail does that make it an obstacle?

im pretty sure its not even legal but dont feel like digging through statutes to prove it.

I wouldn't do it myself, but would not really care if I saw someone else doing it either. It's a tree ffs and not everyone's familiar with every single law out there.

I think it depends on the tree. I mean if it is a big bad ass MF like a 100 yr old oak, and he jumps right out in front of you in the trail, what are you suppose to do?

^^^"idiot" in question^^^

Saw him doing it @ the top of Daniel on Opening weekend. The conversation went like this:

Me, just pulling up: "Don't do that crap"
Him "Why not?"
Me, "Ever heard of why trails get shut down"

Then I drove off, figure if he wanted to do it no amount of talking would stop him. Didn't have a clue who he was till he PM'd me and brought it back up, but for some reason he must not think he was being so cool now...

I've had a few trees run out in front of me, but I've yet to drive up one for any other reason. Light poles, walls, hybrids, and the occasional set of stairs are another story altogether.....

Maybe he should read this

General trail etiquette guidelines for all users from Blueribbon Coalition:

• Respect all trail restrictions and use only trails open to your mode of transportation.
• Be considerate of others on the road or trail.
• When traveling on shared use trails, watch for other types of recreationists.
• Slow down when sight lines are poor.
• Keep speeds low around other recreationists.
• Keep noise and dust low.
• Downhill traffic yields to uphill traffic.
• Keep right, pass left.
• Stay on designated trails.
• Never ride alone.
• Maintain a safe distance between riders.
• Leave gates as you find them.
• Carry out your trash and some others’ as well.
• Keep your ears open – no ear buds for an iPod or MP3.
• Keep pets under control.

Respecting the trail would include not driving up trees.

I think it's a bad idea in the forests. However, if the tree is in the path of the trail, it's fair game. An example is the tree on the ledge before Kodak. I see a lot of people use that tree. On personal property I could care less. Looks pretty cool when ya see it, but looking cool doesn't keep our trails open.

Exactly.

I'm gonna have to disagree completely on this. If 4 wheeling didn't look cool, no one would do it, then there would be no demand, and all the trails would close.

Well, i don't know that I could agree with that. I wheel because it is fawkin fun, not because of what anyone else thinks about it! Also I kinda like building stuff, even though it is really easy to get burned out on it.
