Good ratchet straps.

Get a few remnants of carpet Or get some decent take out if you know an installer and keep strips or chunks of it in the back of the Burb. Lay it under the strap, tighten. When it gets too roached just let it slide out with the scrap and cut some “new” pieces

the pads are 12" long each
So depending on how many straps you use...Im not suggesting you line the entire strap, or even the places where its against a hard surface. What you want is to soften sharpen point and prevent nicks i the web which create wear/fail spots.

When we were coring engines we were hauling6-8/load and 3-4 loads per week. I bought 20 of the linked pads. I kept that schedule up for 2 years. We wore a trailer out before we wore the pads out. 8 years later I still have over half the pads.
But you did have to take a few extra minutes at each load and see where the pinches were and maybe even climb on the pile a bit. But I went from averaging about 3 trips per strap to over 20. They paid for themselves time over. Of course like anything YMMV
 
Just got Northern sales paper today; 2"x27' ratchet straps $9.99. Flat hooks or J hooks. Lot Cheaper than Lowe's, but can't speak for the Quality. I'm using Northern straps, to tie down my Jeep, but haven't hauled scrape.

Northern straps are what i have used for years. The ratchets are crap now. They either bend or jam up and have to be pried to get them to release.
 
Hey Paul Bunyon, True Value has the good ratchet straps just saw them today. Thicker steel ratchets, not stamped, grade 8 bolts, all the metal is anodized same color as grade 8 etc. Just like the ones Northern tool use to sell.
