good rebuilder near Beaufort, NC?

My 87 Toyota R22 is knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door. I'd like to find a fairly local short/long block builder that I can have some input as to the care and accuracy of the buildup. Can't say why but I'm afraid of these mass-market-mega-engine builders. I like the sound of LC Engineering stuff but the prices are too rich for my blood. I also have a running 82 for sale that I was going to install til I found that I'd have trouble with emmisions and exhaust. Help appreciated.
 
Our shop unfortunatly is 6 1/2 hours away, but one word of advice. Since it's knocking, don't crank it. If it hasn't already you may turn a bearing, then you will have to have it line bored adding several hundred to a rebuild.

Thanks, but it's way worse than that. I bought it cheap with the knock and no history. Drove it around til I got up my nerve, then dropped the pan where I found many bits of copper, several plastic pieces, 2 hunks of piston, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Rod bearings (all 50mm) 1, 2 & 4 had some wear but #3 had chunks out of it, and had spun (locks gone, scoring on back) but the rod and cap and crank journal LOOKED great. I didn't mic it cause I'm not that kind of guy. Michelle, sure, but not mic, no matter what you've heard.

Put in same size inserts and, on the opinions of two real mechanics that the #3 piston skirt would be ok for awhile, buttoned it back up quick and dirty.:smokin: No sweat. Let's roll. :driver:

Right. It actually did sound better for a day or two but it's worse now. I'd rather not spend a lotta dough which is what got me thinking about dropping in the 82.

Any further thoughts?
 
Coastal Auto and Transmission on friendly road in morehead might be able to do the work, not sure if they do rebuilds or not, but its a shop full of top notch guys that have a very very strong desire to do it right... I have no ties to them except for being a return customer......

Also, Buddy Gould at Performance (somethin) towards the end of bridges street on the west side seems to do a good job on rebuilds..........
 
Thanks all. I'm going to run these leads down. The local Kittrell's doesn't do Yotas, and apparently NAPA farms complex jobs out to the HQ in Charlotte. ??Two boat engine pros wouldn't touch it either.
 
If you wanna get out on the cheaper side of things, you best bet is to get another engine. A rebuild will cost you no matter where you go. Not too up on yaots, but if you have an engine that you know runs good, I would go that route. If you think it will be too much to swap in, I would say find another. Lots of guys going bigger in yotas so they are out there, you will just have to do some homework. Good luck
 
22r's are about as complex as a briggs and stratton. :flipoff2: That being said, with a spun bearing you;d want a crank kit and at least 1 rod. Of course you;d want the rebuild kit as well. If you dont mind a short drive, George at Cylinder Head Specialists in Wake Forest is a damn good yoda man fro redoing the block and heads for you and he'll score you a complete engine kit with pistons reasonable. :beer:
 
Too bad you're not in Hickory, Troy Fox is very good and very reasonable. And he sticks to just Toyotas

I'm sure some of the western guys know him...
 
I'm from Morehead originally and used to take my 89YJ and 76 vette to a guy on 20th street when crap just couldnt get right. Can't remember the name of the place because it's been so long, but it's up 20th st in front of the Jim Dandy on the right. Great guy to work with, also sponser a local race team.
