So I finally got an invite to google voice.

What the hell is the deal with this thing? Do I read correctly that I get a free number from Google with free domestic calling??
 
You're paranoid. Google offers its products free. Gmail, voice aka Grand Central, Wave, Picasa, etc.. They make buttloads of money, but not directly off of us little guys.

I agree I may be paranoid, but how much are the "free/lower priced" services going to cost us in the future in reduced choices/jobs etc....?

They actually open up jobs in the programming field by providing apis to use their code and their AD software. People can use 'em to really build nifty websites and their search engine drives business to sites.

I like 'em, but they're only as good as the people in charge. We'll see what happens when a clueless bean counter gets put in charge.

im with dylan...im usually pretty up to date on this stuff but this is the first ive even heard of google voice, let alone invites and what not.

The service is free, but is currently by invitation only. When google acquired GrandCentral they closed access while they developed their own google branded application using the GrandCentral technology. At that time you could request an invite when it was available again. In March of 2009, Google started allowing those who requested an invite to use the service. Later in 2009, members became able to invite their friends. Each member has a select number of invites. This is a much sought after service because it allows you to keep the same phone number forever and offers many other really cool features like voicemail transcription. Take a look at the wikipedia page and it will give you some more detail and history.

You guys may also be interested in Gizmo5 which was recently acquired by google as well. It's a free VOIP (voice over IP) service that used SIP (Session Initiated Protocol). It will ultimately be integrated with Google Voice. If you don't know what that is then imagine Skype. It works similar to that. You can tie the two together now if you have a Gizmo5 account, but it is closed to new accounts. Like when Google Voice was acquired, you can request an invite for when it is launched. Imagine being able to use your internet enabled mobile phone (except iPhone cuz Apple is mean) to make phone calls without using your minutes.

Tell ya what... I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 100. The three who come closest to this number will get an invite to Google Voice from me. I will allow the guessing to be open for 24 hours starting at 7:30 pm. This is open to paying members. If you haven't paid then be sure to do so and then post your number up.

Requirements:
- Be a paying nc4x4.com member/vendor
- Have posted your number in this thread by 1/14/2010 @ 7:30 PM
- Not have insulted or pissed me off in the past
