Talk to me about cameras for action on the trail...
We all know how it goes when you show someone a ledge or something on pics or video from a cell phone. It never does justice for it. I hate taking the time to get out and video or take pics but I'm usually glad I did later.
I've been thinking about getting a GoPro or something. Maybe sandy clause will bring me one!
Any input on the best one, place to mount and such?

GoPro doesn't do any better at showing how steep or challenging something is.
My wife gave me the Hero4 Silver and it's a cool camera but it won't do that.
I keep a mount on the dashboard. If you put it out on the bumper lower to the ground it does a little better but can get dirty. Inside is also nice so you can keep power running to it. They go through batteries pretty quick.
Pick up some extra mounts and you can add them to helmets, motorcycles, any toys you're into.

I just love the wide angle most of those style cameras have. That's the main advantage over a cell phone.

Been wanting to get one to record our atv riding adventures. Hard to explain to the fam and friends how beautiful stuff was that we seen and I usually have the phone packed away in water tight stuff so it's inconvenient to get it out. I'll be following this thread.

I have a pair of Replay HDs and love them. I've found that they have less of a tendency to give you a "fish eye" view than the GoPros.

Plus, they are much cheaper, smaller, etc

Bought a contour off amazon. Only used a couple of times but I like the video quality so far. Lot cheaper than go pro.

I've used GoPro and Contour. GoPro has a way better and much wider picture. I used them for skydiving. The contours controls are awesome for fumbling around with large gloves, but again, the picture was narrow and it didn't have a way to check your camera angle like GoPro does. Not to mention contour closed its doors, so no more support/accessories. I've surfed, jumped, and shot with GoPro. Best one in my opinion and tons of aftermarket crap.

Does any of the competitors have the smart phone apps to go with them? I really like that about the GoPro

Contour is back in business. Pretty sure my lense has a degree ring to check the angle.
My contour had those little lasers to check your angle, but it would still cut the lower third of the picture out for me most of the time. It also wasn't Bluetooth capable to actually see what you're filming. May have just been my model, but I wasn't happy with it.

Looking into this as well

I like the idea of the cube go pro for mounting on my dash anyone have experience with those?

Seems every company has their own style right now. A lot of options.

Go pro seems to be the most supported.

Yeah I'm thinking GoPro is the way to go. I just have no idea which which. I seen some for $130-$200 which is reasonable to me, but also some up to $400 which I would assume are way better?? So may choices

If you are going to just use it on the Jeep/Off Road rig I would not buy the cube, however if you want to use it on helmet, mountain biking, etc the size is nice.

I personally run a hero3+ silver.

My Sony is nice because it has WiFi so you can use your phone for a screen while you record

Only if your around wifi right? Is that also how the GoPro works with the phone, needing to be with wifi?

The GoPro or Sony, etc basically act as a wireless router to create a mini wifi network that your phone connects to. So basically your phone connectors to the gopro's wireless network.

So it would work it the middle of Harlan with my phone? Sorry I'm not up to date these days on the tech.

Yes but it's not an Internet enabled "wifi" signal.

My iUSB port does the same thing where I can use my iPhone to log on to my iUSB port and access any document (or movie) on my USB drive and not the Internet.

Same thing with the camera.

I didn't read all these comments, but I have a gopro 3+ (I think) its great to video the guy in front of you or taking it off and shooting someone else. With it on your rig it just looks like your bouncing around.
