I bought my daughter the 8GB one tonight. Kid at bestBuy said it would run great of Windows Media Player. We get home and hook it up it says to download soft ware to get started so we do. Now 4 hours later the ---- thing still dont work. After down loading the soft ware it said we had to update. Clicked the link it gave and it takes us back to Zunes home page. We are still on dail up for now so downloading any thing takes awhile. HELP

OK, I can't speak about the 8GB model, but I have a 30GB unit, and yes, it has to do all the things you've listed. When you buy it, it already possesses the basic firmware. Once you either install the software on your computer with the supplied disc, or connect it to the Zune site (whichever the instructions tell you to do), it will download the latest version of the complete firmware and software.

Now then, do you already have any music files in WMP and picture files on the computer in? If so, once you tell it to search, it will find the music and jpg. picture files on your computer and place a link to them into the Zune folder. When you tell it to sync, it'll add those files to its internal memory. If you're on dial-up, it's gonna be a long process for downloading some music files.

It didnt come with a disc it says to go to the Zune site Which we did and down loaded the soft ware ( took a little over 3 hours ) After that when we try to run the soft ware it says we must get an update and gives a link. The link just takes you back to the Zune home page. Thats where I'm lost. We just run in a circle and I cant figger out what we are doing wrong.

Yes we already have alot of music and pics on the computer. Takes about 30 min a song to down load.

That tells me the 8GB handles things a bit differently than the older 30GB I have. This may or may not be helpful, but if I go to the Zune software on my computer and then connect mine to the computer, the computer goes to the Zune site and checks for updates. If there are any, it downloads them into the computer and the Zune. Lemme hook up again and I'll see what it does. There may be enough differences that what goes on on my end means nothing to what you're dealing with, but I'll give it a shot here.

1st step, get high speed! dealing with anything on dial-up is a headache especially when dowloading software or music b/c they are such large files. I think the only thing that uses a modem these days are credit card machines. So spend the xtra $40 a month to get the high speed, trust me the whole family will appreciate it.
Ok so what platform are you using? Vista, XP, 98, 3.11 (i hope not the last one!). When you plug the zune player in via USB does a pop-up come up stating that the computer has found new hardware for removable media? If so do the automatic update (if available), this will install the drivers necissary for your Zune player to sync to the computer. This is probably what you downloaded from the Zune website (i am at work and cannot view the site). Now, the file you downloaded is it a .zip or .exe file? If it is exe that stands for executable and you can double click it and go from there. If it is a .zip and you have win Vista or XP it will be able to unzip (decompress) those files. Any older platform and you will have to install winzip. Other than that you really shouldnt have anymore problems. Sounds like all you are trying to do is install the driver. i would come and help you but i dont even know where SnowCamp is. Plus, you have dial-up and i would probably leave there bald from ripping my hair out. Good luck!

High speed may not be available where you are yet, but y2k is right. The file is a zune.exe file, and it's already there if the first download was successful. Two things: any file you want the Zune to sync has to be a shared file, so set that in Windows. Second, try booting up the Zune software, then connect the Zune to the USB port. That should immediately get the software's attention that the device is there, and it should check the device to see if it recognizes that particular Zune. If not, it'll prompt you to name it and yadda yadda so on. There should be a "Device" icon or word on that page or some option to a page with that option. Clicking on "Device" will put you into the individual Zune settings that will allow you to do the update thing.

All of this is providing your software works like the 30GB does, and you have a recent enough edition of WMP to support the Zune. The break is either WMP 9 or 10, can't remember which. Hope this helps.

PS: I'll be in the Kimesville/Snow Camp area this PM, so if you want some help, I'll give it a shot. PM me if you do.

Thanks for the help we are gonna try to get this thing up and running. If I could get high speed I would. I'm too far out for cable, cant get DSL and aint gonna pay for sat.
