Got an NC CCW? Watch out

This is according to discussion I have had with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's office.,
The Attorney General of state of North Carolina has decided that it would save money by NOT notifying CCW holders about pending expiration of their licenses. They have instructed the various Counties to cease sending these reminders.
In past years, the state sent out a pending expiration notice, similar to the one you get if your car or your driver's license was about to expire.
Not a huge deal, right? Well, maybe.
If you are like me and have always depended on those notifications, have always renewed as soon as notified, then the lack of a notification means that I was carrying concealed for 3 months after my license expired.
Here is the fun parts...
If you let your permit expire, then you have to start from the very beginning, just as if you were applying for the very first time. That means you have to apply, pay the fees, get the background check, the fingerprints, re-take the certification class and wait 90 days or more for a new permit.
It also means that if you get caught carrying on an expired license, your county can use that as justification to deny a future permit request.
Just wanted to pass on this latest in a long line of government bullshit.

Seems to me that would be a budget item of the Sheriff's office, and their prerogative on whether to spend the money or not to mail them out, unless state law requires a reminder letter. If that requirement changed, then it would just be done at the option of the Sheriff, or not.

Anyway...I just renewed mine a few weeks ago. I got a reminder letter from the Lee County Sheriff about 8 weeks before expiration reminding me to renew.

BTW, took exactly 27 days to get the renewal permit in.

edit...and just ONE person remembering to renew because of the letter brings in $75 cash...wouldn't take but a couple of renewals to pay for the postage.

That sucks, I was hoping to get my CCW over the summer...One more thing to be paranoid about forgetting....On a similar note I had my ID checked last fall buying beverages:beer: that person happened to notice that my license expired 8 MONTHS EARLIER!!! I was pissed, I never received a notice in the mail. I even went through one license check over that period and apparently even that cop didn't notice it. From now on I will be paranoid about checking expiration dates...

yep, I am RE-taking my CCW class next weekend. I never got a reminder from Union Co., but called the day it was to expire to see if I could run down there on my lunch break and pay the renewal, lady said oh I am sorry it ran out last night at midnight:rolleyes:....that was her way of giving me the big :flipoff2:

Oh well...:shaking:

Mine is in the process of being renewed for the second time. I told them at the sheriffs office the 75 dollar fee to carry a gun legally concealed is a crock of shit. I told them I should be like all these thugs around here and not waste my money. The government has to have their hands in everything.

I have 4 months till I need to reup.

i thought it was called a CWP (concealed weapons permit) atleast thats what my instructor called it, and the sheriffs department. i learn something new everyday

in NC its called a CHP...concealed handgun permit.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I'll check and see when mine expires.

The DB is following the example set by the Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Registrar. She decided that to save money it would stop sending expiration reminder as well as notifications that the registry had decided for any reason to suspend ones license.
This resulted in windfall revenues from fines and income for lawyers from the people who were arrested fro driving on suspended licenses they were never told were suspended.
They screwed when they got a prominent radio talk host arrested. They suspended his license for having too much insurance. He was properly insured in MA but there was paperwork snafu that had not yet canceled his Virginia insurance.
He spent the night in jail. Before he had the chance to humiliate them in court, the DA dropped the case.

ive never heard it called that. everyone calls it a concealed weapons permit.
I'm looking at mine right now and it clearly says(Concealed Handgun Permit).

When I took my Conceal Carry class back last October the guy told me right then to make sure I did the renewal paper work 90 days before it expired.

Mine expired and I did not know it. I was pulled over for speeding while carrying. The State Trooper made sure I knew it was a felony, had me put the handgun in plain sight and sent me on my way. What a PITA to "renew" it.

Yup. The language is pretty clear.
"At least 45 days prior to the expiration date of a permit, the sheriff of the county
where the permit was issued shall send a written notice to the permittee explaining that the permit is about to expire...."
The head of the top law enforcement office in the state decided to break the law.

If the gov decides to confiscate weapons one day when were under muslim law/global law we CHP holders will be the first to be visited.

In most of the gun magazines it's referred to as a CCW permit.
Concealed Carry Weapons-permit.

I had never heard it called a CWP, or A CHP when I lived up North.

CCW doesn't work too well if you have CDL's as I do, It's a federal offense if you get caught with ANY weapon in a commercial vehicle. Can't get a permit, no how, no way! last thing I want is a officer ( in any state!) pulling up behind me and running my tag and finding out I have a CCW and CDL's. Just something to think about if you have CDL's Your Hot Dog Guy

i would like to see the law you are speaking of about not being ablt to carry a weapon in a commercial vehicle. there is no federal law about this. if you can legaly transport a weapon concealed or otherwise in your stete you can carry in a commercial vehicle.
