Government Shutdown

Will the possible impending government shutdown affect the national forests/parks, specifically will Uwharrie be closed if the gov. shuts down or will the rangers just go home?

It won't have too much of an effect on Uwharrie. Most probably won't even notice that the govt has shut down (if it does).

if it's a national park won't it close if the gov does shutdown ?? I heard on NPR that in some national parks the gates will be closed. I would have also thought the campgrounds would be closed since they are staffed by gov employees ?? Hope all this is for not wanted to head up Sunday am for a daytrip.

I talked with the Forest Service last weekend and nothing was mentioned about Uwharrie shutting down. Keep in mind also campgrounds like Arrowhead are run by a volunteer host (Janet Becker), so it doesn't effect everyone exactly. I will make some calls but if Terry Savery was saying the work day(s) would go forward even if the govt. shuts down I highly doubt the gates will close.

The government hasn't approved a 2011 budget yet. They are running on an extension of 2010's. It expires Friday at midnight.

As explained by a government/nasa employee to me.

Dude if we drive all the way up there and they try that shit, I dont want to say we will cut the locks... but... well... Ill be in a bad mood and things happen.

We did talk to someone today at URE that said if the government shuts down, it will not close until monday.

Not a good thing to do, in the case of private land that is the wrong choice, in the case of ure, it might be ok... Lol

But yeah, in the case of private land, major no no, get permission before hand, sign or not, trespassing makes us look bad.

If there is a shut down the campgrounds will be closed but the trails will remain open. Reservations made at the campgrounds prior to shut down will be handled by the reservation company, but the gates to arrowhead, kings mtn point, group camp and badin WILL be closed.
