My dad is looking to purchase a GPS unit. I figure he doesn't need one over $150, but he does need one that can be updated, and it needs a decent speaker and screen size. What do you guys recommend?

Look for a Garmin Nuvi. I have one of them and love it. The speaker is great, it changes color between night and day, you can update it plus add mem to it, you can change the little icon that represents your car ( mine is a jeep ), and so many other things to it. The great thing is they have a lot of different models that have different features.

Mine is a TomTom that my wife got on a Black Friday deal for like $50. It's been great. I personally don't think that there's a lot of added value in the additional bells and whistles. Keep it simple.

Seems like a decent unit
Noticed there is a version with the lifetime map and lifetime traffic available aswell If thats something that may interest him

Im using a TomTom XL 340TM which has lifetime maps and lifetime traffic and have been happy with it.
One of the features I was most impressed with is the lane assist so in addition to units with lifetime map updates, its a must have feature for me even though its not always guaranteed to pop up with either garmins or tomtom

I have a Magellan and hate it, also two Garmins and like both. Latest is a 1450LMT and really like it a lot, so many hidden things, it still surprises us, if you know how, it will tell the temp!

Tom-tom here...traded my garmin for this one after I thought I upgraded when my first tt got stolen.
