Is there a reliable device on the market that gives you accurate GPS coordinates? I am thinking about using one to plot a trail around some land but not cross over property lines. Any recommendations?

MotionX-GPS app works well for me. Doesn't need cell service, but needs satellite. Works indoors and under tree canopy.

I use it to plot trails, and keep track of distance traveled, and allow me to find trail head when riding.

Buying something with better than 2meter accuracy is probably more money than you want to spend. You can get to roughly a meter accuracy for somewhere around $750-1000 if I remember correctly. That's probably changed by now. Basically cost goes up exponentially with accuracy.

It's a good research project though, to learn about the different types of receivers and the different types of correction to make them more accurate.

If you're willing to stay about 10 feet from the property lines, there's a lot of units that can get you there for a few hundred bucks (or use a cell phone).

Like I said, research project.

Garmin eTrex. Ancient but still supported if you have a serial port to export tracks/NEMA position information. Basically a hiking GPS. Good to 10' or so with WAAS signal. Includes magnetic compass and has coordinate display included. Probably cheap on eBay. Oh and it only uses 2 AAs. $30, cheap enough. Make sure it includes the cable if you want to export tracks later and make a map.

Pin-point gps accuracy has a price tag with lots of zeros on it.
Use whatever handheld you have, or can afford, and give yourself a 30-40 ft. buffer and you'll be ok.
I have seen handhelds be dead on one minute, off by 65 feet the next.
btw- I have spent countless hours using mobile and handheld gps units ..... Garmin is as good as any .... but just don;t care much for Magellan.

Unless you are spending $20k+ for survey grade equipment, you won't get much more accurate than what you get with a $200-$400 unit or even cell phone apps.

Thanks guys, I was leaning towards an app on my phone, but just wanted to see if that was good enough. I don't need to be exact, just want to make sure I am not tresspassing

Use your phone.
