A friend of mine is selling the stock rear end out of his '98 Jeep Grand Cherokee and he was wanting to know what it is. I haven't seen it so I have no clue. The Jeep is 2wd and it's a V8 if that helps any. It's also posi with a 3.73 gear. I told him it was probably either a D35, or 44. Thanks for the help!

It is a 44a since it is a '98 with the 5.2 liter. Esy test for him is to take a magnet to the pumkin, if it does not stick, then it is aluminum, and is for sure the 44a.

AKA, you better hope it is a D35 (ugh) since the 44a's are even worse

I am not so sure that is the case. Skidding and trussing a 44a makes it IMO a very capable axle; however, there is not much you can do to a 35 to make it very capable. The biggest problem with the 44a is the lack of aftermarket support.

a '98 2wd with a V8???? really?

or just look at the fill plug. Rubber plug = D35. Threaded metal plug = AL44

the rear 44a I just picked up has a rubber fill plug.
