Anyone have them, breed them or have a line on a breeder??? I'm looking for either breed, or a mix of the two. I currently have a 3 year old Mastidane/Daniff (whatever you want to call it), she's 160lbs and about 33" at the shoulder. I was looking for another, but seems as if it's become a designer mutt over the last couple years, and are more expensive than the pure breds they came from. Looking for pet quality, I know some of the Dane breeders in the state are in the $2500-5k range for 'show dogs'.

Yeah...I absolutely hate that. I talk to folks all the time 'I had no idea it would get so big' or 'it's eating too much' or 'it's stronger than I am, I can't control it'. And I don't mind adopting, actually put an app in for one last night, but I'm not a huge fan of breaking a dog that size with their stubborn demeanor. Most folks want puppies because they're cuter, I like them because it's easier to train.

We had a Dane...love them big stupid animals.

Really mine was dumb as a box of rocks. He would walk into our sliding glass door over and over again, and when youd open it hed walk right through and then seem surprised he was outside.
Ive got a freind that is a breeder, but doenst have any pups right now and likely wont for the rest of the year (health issues with her husband they dont want to deal with any pups for a while) she literally cried when they made the scooby doo movie the other year because she predicted (rightfully) that every bozo would go buy a Dan and then realize how much room they need and just how much food a 175lb dog eats.

Our Dan was classified as a Giant. He was like 218 I think.

Miss his dumb ass sometimes

We have 2 Danes I'm sure my wife will post some info for you.

We have 2 goofballs, female is 5 months & male is 4 months. We got them from a breeder in Winston-salem...kind of a crazy dog lady but super helpful! Puppyfind.com & puppyfinder.com are great along with craigslist. You'll find a lot on craigslist in the 8-month range because the dipshit owner didn't realize it would be so big & clumsy.

Adopt a Dane maybe? See so many people get either dog and can't handle it and have to get rid of them. Doh! WTF did you expect?

there's 2 kinds of people, those who need/care for their dogs and those who don't and never will no matter the breed. Iv'e know too many people who think it's OK to leave their dogs in a damn crate all day cause they don't want them to mess up their house while they're at work. Several even say " the dog likes to stay in the crate" to which I say BS, why don't you try it and see how you like it?

Friends of mine adopted a Dane last year that had been crated since it was a pup, In a small crate. I personally would like to crate the couple that had the dog before them. Due to not being able to move around much it's rear leg muscles are under developed/permanently damaged. It walks as if it has hip displaysia@ 13mos. This couple has owned Danes for over 25yrs, I'm glad they found the dog. They have another in the house. I've looked after their danes for over 15 yrs. Kinda awesome to have a 185# dog back it's ass up to the couch seat beside you and "sit down" with all four paws still on the floor, lol.

Gotta love a Blue Merle! A friend had one, "Ernest" actually was a 'mastidor' and he was the sweetest, happiest dummy!

My uncle has always had Irish Wolfhounds and their female was 'rescued' from her previous owners (by the breeder) who also crated her ridiculously...Stupid people will do stupid things to a dog, no matter what the size and, doing lab rescue, we saw all types. Even our Java was kept like a hamster for ~six months before she was reclaimed by the rescue and we adopted her.

And people think I am strange because I get upset because the wife wont let the labs "upstairs" in our place...so I built them their own room in the basement.

They have crates, because they like them, but the crates dont have doors...mainlly because my female liked to pin the male in and make him bark...it was good fun to her.

They also have a window unit.

They still spend most o the time outside with us.

I guess everyone has their opinion about crates. But if you saw my dogs begging to go to bed at night or when we are leaving, you might change your mind(probably not). Personally, I think they are great. Every dog I have had since I left my folks place has been crate trained. There is definitely a right and wrong way to do it though. My dogs have a pretty great life and are taken care of quite well.

I will say we do crate train also but most of the time the dogs go in on there own cut they know it's there place. That being said we also have appropriate crate for the dog size as not to make them stay in one place. When they are fully trained and are able to stay out of their crate without causing themselves harm they can stay out and have free roam.
I don't really crate the wife the picture is just for size reference... Lol

Dogs definitely have/need 'their space' and there is a right and a wrong way to crate train. Ours just have their beds, which would fit in a crate if we used them, and they will go there if it's late, thundering, or too loud/noisy with people over.* The rescue told us Java was crate trained, so we got one for her at first. She was always anxious as hell when we came home and never liked going in it. We came home at lunch to walk her, so she was not in it all day and it was a big one for a 55-ish # dog. It wasn't until after she chewed bars off (a wire crate like the one in the photo above) that we found out about how she'd been kept by her previous owners... Honestly, I was as mad at the rescue as I was at those unnamed people, for not telling us straight the first time around.

*Ok, Porter will go to his bed. If we have anyone over, Java bitches because there's no room on the couch.

Just for the record I don't have a problem with crates, as long as they're used correctly. I have a large like one like pictured for our dogs downstairs. In the event ours do come inside(they're outside dogs) they willingly go into it. My brothers dogs sleep in their crates with the doors open and don't come out until they get let out in the morning to go to the bathroom(Weimaraner & Pomeranian...with a blue mohawk:D

I've been looking for a big dog to leave at home when I am out of town. I am leaning towards Mastiff or Rotty. They'd have to be good with kids, my girls are Elmira and Elmira 2......... My poor Shih Tzu rarely gets to walk on her own and the little doggy outfits are getting out of control.

The peeps I know used crates hardly big enough to hold the dogs, they could barely turn around or lay down inside them. 2 developed hip/leg problems as GOINORVIT described and most seemed to be hyperactive or unruly even as adults and with obedience training, when out of the cages.

When they are fully trained and are able to stay out of their crate without causing themselves harm they can stay out and have free roam.
This is how i see crate training should be. my current dog was almost 2 before i trusted him to be out on his own when i was gone all day long, i come home and he is asleep inside his crate most of the time (with his blanket but thats a whole other story). crates should be used as a safe place for the dog.

My last few dogs have been English Mastiffs. They are gentle giants. There is a Mastiff forum out there my wife helps on. I do not think we will ever own another breed as they are so human like. Ours has his own bed and pretty much owns the couch also. Ours is slightly underweight at 200 lbs.

I have always wanted a big dog, but the fence around my back yard (1/3 acre fenced) is only 4' tall. I have always had labs and love their demeanor. My dogs stay outside but have a 480 sqft doghouse (doggie door in the back wall of my shop). My lab loves sleeping under my workbench or under my rig.

My uncle had a Bull Mastiff and a Great Pyrenees. They destroyed his house.

Yeah man...I'd appreciate any info when/if they have another litter. I'd agree, not the brightest dogs I've been around...but mine can pitch a fit like no other. Her go to is flipping food and water bowls when she's not pleased with me.

mastidor FTW. mastiff + labrador

200lbs of full on retard.

I really try to stay more Dane than mastiff, I like the size a mastiff brings to the table, but prefer the dane demeanor and personality.

Happen to have the breeder's name??? I've been using the puppyfind/er and CL...just difficult for the vetting process to make sure it's just not some sorta puppy mill. I'd honestly have no issues picking up an 8 month Dane off CL if the owner didn't want $6-800 they paid for the puppy, plus a rehoming fee, plus reimbursement for the food and housing they provided...maybe an exaggeration...but it does seem every 8 month old dane I see on CL is a 3/4 Euro from a champion bloodline for the low low price of a grand. For a grand, I'll just go to a breeder.

I'm not a huge fan of letting my animals roam the upstairs when I'm not home, so I just close the doors. But I leave them out all day, they have a crate if they want to use it, they have bedding if they want to use it. Family knows where the spare key is, so if they feel like singing in during the day to play, they do. My neighbor has a spare key (and has Danes), so she'll swing in too and play with them. Then when I'm home, they're pretty much lap dogs until I go to sleep. Then they roam the house as they see fit throughout the night.

I will say we do crate train also but most of the time the dogs go in on there own cut they know it's there place. That being said we also have appropriate crate for the dog size as not to make them stay in one place. I have the big plastic enclosed ones. My dogs will use them to sleep in some times...but will mainly just go there for their own solitude. Too many people over, they'll peace out...don't want to share a toy, they'll go there...know they did something wrong, that's where they'll go.

Ended up pulling the trigger on this little cutie from Atlanta. The stud was a 36" 175lb dane, and the momma was a 30" 200lb English mastiff. Went with her because both parents were AKC registered and had great pedigrees. Ended up paying more than I wanted for a mixed breed, but have a little peace of mind knowing she didn't come from a puppy factory and the bloodlines are good.
