Project “Great White”

This is how she sits right now.

‘Shopped version taking the shell off.

This will be built to run moderate trails like Callalantee/Harlan bypasses, Uwharrie, etc and will also be used for Forest Service Workdays and trail recovery/repair. Not planning on doing anything wild, BTDT, gonna take it easy for awhile.

It is a 5.9 gasser

Can't wait to see the transformation John!!

Admit it JC.... you were inspired by me.

You ought to rock the long box, though.

drove buy your place the other day to see if i could catch ya outside and saw the truck and new driveway!!

dont get that nice cement all dirty now

but i cant wait to see that thing around. whats the plans for bumper/armor?

Great White gets some recovery gear and bumpers.

Got a XRC12 for the front. I've had two of the XRC8 winches and have been very pleased with them.

I got the bumpers from a fellow NC4x4 member. They were originally on a K5 so the brackets had to be cut off/modified to work on the Ram. Over all the stinger and bends seems to be close to what I would have made. I may add some bits and pieces later depending on how Great White progresses. The weight of the bumper and winch will probably necessitate some new coils or coil spring spacers, plus there is some trimming of fenders and wheel well liners that will need to be done also.

The rear is pretty simple and doesn't really protect as much as I would like. I'll probably do some modification to it to provide the coverage I want.

Glad to see some progress :D

How bad is that front bumper going to snag rocks? Anyway to bring it up a little?

holy bumper batman. that looks sweet. any plans to fill in the gap between the headlights and bumper? maybe an offroading light on each side?

lookin good JC, i may swing by later today and take a closer look :)

A good start and now you have some springs to offset that weight

The front bumper looks functional, but it may look/work better off road if you were to cut and angle up the outer 'wings' to end closer to the headlight. Trust me though- you want to protect those lights, they aren't cheap to buy, but break easily!!

For the rear bumper, it is very common for Dodge guys to cut the lower half of the corner at the body line and wrap the bumper around to the rear fenderwell. Good protection for the remainder of the fender and I think it could be blended easily with what you have.

Great White has it's baptism at "The Q", the ECORS Harlan KOH Qualifier, at Black Mountain OHV in Evarts, KY. It was the first trip with the new 35" Maxxis tires and I noticed the loss of power. I got 14 mph on the way over running the tires at 50 psi, wasn't able to use 5th gear on the long hills but over all was pleased with the ride of the tires.

As a volunteer I manned Check Point #1 which was at the entrance to Your Turn. I rode several of the main trails and the Bighorn MTs seemed to work great. I have slight rubbing at full lock so I will look into some wheel spacers, 1/4" might do it, but over all I am pleased with the tire selection.

While in Harlan I picked up a used 30 spline Detriot Locker for the rear so next on the build agenda is installing that along with a Lock Right for the front.

Anybody know who made those bumpers? Seems like decent aftermarket bumpers for K5s are few and far between these days. That's a pretty sweet set of wheels you got there, though.

John..here's a bumper I built for my grandpa's 3500 2nd gen
