Greene County NC Pole Barn questions

Now that we are through our wedding, it is time for me to start planning on a shop to be able to work on projects inside, instead of in a field. Looking for a little guidance if anybody has some insight. We are on the fence between a metal building or a pole barn style building. Size being 30x50x(13-16ft tall depending on building). Trying to get answers out of my local building inspector seems to be going nowhere. It seems the requirements are so ridiculous that a "out the door" metal building got a $15-22k markup to meet codes in my area. I decided to try to get some quotes for pole barns to help us settle on a decision. To help us make sure we were getting a contractor who knew what they were doing, I reached out to our building inspector again to ask for the requirements for a post frame/pole barn and was informed we had to have 4 foot centers for the posts and 2 foot centers for the rafters. This seems crazy? Every post frame building I have seen from the kits uses 8-12 foot centers and the rafters match that and the purlins are what are spaced close? Is that line of thinking correct? It seems like if these are the requirements for the county for pole barns, none of these pole barns I see around should exist or at least be permitted. Just wondering if anybody on here has any insight on pole barn codes in NC or greene county. Thanks!

@rockcity will be your guy for this. I'm 100% sure your inspector is mistaken though.
That's what I was thinking, maybe a misunderstanding or something? But he hasn't responded to my follow-up email and is never in office to take phone calls. Hoping a can get my hands on a local contractor who is used to dealing with the local codes when my quotes start to come in.

Call r&r ironworks, they can get you or your inspector stamped drawings with snow and wind loads way exceeding what your area requires. Make sure he knows what a steel truss post frame building actually is.
I hadn’t even checked with them yet but they seem similarly priced to the builders discount kits I’ve seen. I will have to get a quote from them!

Yep. My sales guy for my building actually contacted my permit office and spoke with the inspector himself to make sure the building I was getting had the right snow and wind load rating and the stamp plans were inline with the current codes.

Awesome! Sounds like they are a good company to work with!

Reach out to me if you have any further questions. I’m in Greenville and am a licensed NC General Contractor. Your inspector is mistaken. He is referencing residential stick built requirements, not a pole barn with steel trusses. An engineer’s stamp goes a long way when your building deviates from the norm.

I sure as hell don’t know everything, just enough to get in trouble, err, uh, talk my way through permitting and inspectors that tend to not have a clue. :)

I appreciate it! I figured he was mistaken but having a new construction home on a main highway, we aren't wanting to push our luck with permits and crossing the county inspector. Wanted to see what other's experiences were in the area. Everyone we know personally has basically told us to not worry about permits, but i'm not about that life haha, we try to do as much by the book as we can when it comes to this sort of thing. Whatever we end up with will definitely be certified or have engineered plans.

Nope, I grew up in warren county near lake gaston and my step father owned his own construction company, so everything was always permits. So that's how i've always been. My luck, I would be the one who gets hit with fines for not getting permits for everything.
