I was on the road last week in my 95 jeep wrangler and my u joint broke and my drive shaft slipped off and started leaking auto transmission fluid from the transfercase. i got that all fixed up with no problem.
i drove it the next day on the highway and heard a slight clanking noise and reminded me that i forgot to put fluid back in the transfer case and did that once i got home. It road fine until the Clanking noise came back louder along with a new problem which was the Difficult shifting and Grinding Noise.
I looked at the bottle and found that i had put a whole bottle of DEXTRON 3 along with a half a bottle of TYPE F auto transmission fluid in my transfer case
(stupid people at auto zone put a bottle of TYPE F in the wrong place)
I relized my mistake and flushed out the T-Case and put DEXTRON 3. Good news is that it seemed to eliminate the clunking noise.
Bad news is that i have a bad grinding noise and difficult shifting!!!! the grinding noise always occurs when my 5th gear is engaged. Sometimes it also grinds in 3rd when up shifting but it will almost always grind while down shifting into 3rd. hopefully my mistake (listed at the top) did not cause this whole problem
There are multiple things that i think could be wrong but i dont know which one to choose. I think it would either be the clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, Fingure Fatigue on pressure plate, synchro gear, or something else in the gear box. i would rather it be that master or slave cyl. because i would not want to take the trany out.
I have done a couple of tests in my jeep and hopefully they will help anyone identify where this problem might be hiding.
At a dead stop, my 5th gear will still grind when i go to shift it with the clutch petal down. if i press the clutch petal down and wait for a while (about 7 sec.) 5th gear will not grind.
Also i found that if i have my engine turned off and i go down a hill i do not hear any grinding noises until i press the petal down and shift into 2nd or 1st.
All the above problems make me want to believe that this might be a synchro which i would hate to be wrong if i tried to fix it because i dont want to take the trany out.
I also found that if i have my engine on and pump the clutch about 15 times and then shift into 1st, i hear my drive shaft move and also see a little vibration movement in my rear tires (it did not start rolling forward though)
this makes me want to believe the problem is my slave or master cylinder.
