Grinding plates off my frame

I bought a nice 75 CJ-6 chassis to replace the rotted one on my 74. The PO had a cage built for it and the bottom parts are welded to plates that are welded to the outside of the frame. They welded one pass top to bottom on each side of the plates (no weld on top and bottom of the plate).

I need to remove these plates without doing any damage to my frame. Is a simple angle grinder used to grind away the weld bead the best way to do this?

I am most concerned with the frame as it is the reason I bought the whole thing but it would be nice to save the cage so I can sell it. Its an intermediate CJ so it is an open C channel frame.

Thanks

Bob

Should be able to remove weld on one side with a grinder (torch if capable) and slightly grind or score weld on other side. Then drive chisel in on fully cut side and pull plate off, watch attached side to make sure weld is breaking and not the frame.

You have the right idea. Get a few grinding discs, you'll probably need them (depending on their quality). Thinner ones are easier to work with, but wear out quicker. Remember to wear goggles or full face protection- not satety glasses!!! Ask me how I know...

Just take your time and grind as much as you can before trying to use the chisel and hammer.
