I have a 2004 GMC 1500 Sierra Quad cab with a 6 inch lift. Has Independent Front Suspension and I have started hearing a grinding and popping noise coming from the front side. I also have grease coming out one of the boots on the passenger side axle shaft. Anyone know what the problem might be? Thanks

Yep, get used to that IFS puking parts post-lift. How long ago was it lifted?

Any chance you cranked your torsion bars a little extra? Just for my own curiosity, can you get a pic of the CV half-shaft angle?

I'd check out the ball-joints, tie-rod ends and idler arm when I was under if it were me...word of experience.

cv shaft

is the grinding and popping only happening when you turn, like in a small front wheel drive car when the cv's go bad??

and just for lack of knowledge, do the half shafts spin on this particular model truck all the time, or only when in 4wd?

If you are also running larger tires and wheels with more offset than stock, you'll need unit bearings too.

Though, those go out with out the added stress of bigger wheels and tires.
Jack up the offending side, grab the wheel top and bottom and see if you have any play, I'm betting you do.

When you get the parts DO get the parts with the ABS sensor included, be careful to not strain the wire harness on new part

The Half shafts spin all the time on these trucks, though they only have power when in 4x (unless it has AutoTrac)

I'm betting your problem is the unit bearing, and grease on the boot is a warning of a cracked boot.

by the time you spend the money to fix the IFS you would almost have a solid axle swap & have a real truck
