Should there be a groove where the rear main seal rides? Cuz I got one on my crank or is this normal? What the hell do I do about this? Don't say pull the crank

TIMKEN Part # KWK99363
Kwik Sleeve, Optional Repair; Rear

This a sleeve that you knock over the end of the sealing surface (carefully) and it covers the groove allowing new seal a fresh surface to ride on.

Also called a ready sleeve, I have used these a few times on Toyota and GM Balancers.

I'd be surprised if anyone had that on the shelf, but it's possible, I pulled the number from Rockauto.com cost was about $25ish, includes seal, sleeve and possible a small tube of red locktite to keep the sleeve in place.

I don't know that, it has seperate sleeve listed for the front and the rear for a 2001 excursion 6.8L (s) engine.

I am personally not familiar with the engine in question, merely offering a suggestion /possible solution.

Being that the engine has a one peice rear main, I'm under the impression that there is no flange on that crank.

Unless you are refering to a different engine ( older fords/chevys for instance) then no, you'll need a different solution for a flanged crank.

Ok well that sucks. I can't tell if its sopposed to be there or not it looks really clean and smooth and the old seal actually looked goood. It only has 124k. I'd like to get a for sure on the groove before I put it back together

if advance is ordering it, why not get it from rockauto for their price?

Wanted it sunday I'd like a way to work monday. Did some test installs with the new seal and it actually sits behind that groove so apparently I've wasted all kinds of time worrying for nothing. Went ahead and installed it and mounted up the tranny now time for bed. Thanks for the help

I wouldn't say "worried for nothing" you have/had a valid concern.

The big question is, will having replaced the seal stop the oil leak ?

was this the source of the leak ? or at least a contributor?

I'd be more pissed off that this wasn't the cure after having done all that work.

Yea wouldn't that suck! Its def the source the engine is clean otherwise. There was a thick stain of oil runnin from the rearmain onto the block. This better fix it
