OK, I started grooving my 44 TSL's the other day. The groover I borrowed makes abouta 1/4" wide, and 1/4" deep cut. Tires are 90-95% tread. So I have probably better that 1/2" tread till the wear bars. Should I go deeper? or should I wait till I wear them down and then cut again? Will going deeper make that much difference in the traction? Should I go wider?
TIA

Same boat here with the 1/4" wide groover. I went with two side by side passes on my SX's. No real reason, I just wanted to open the groove as wide as the other voids. As for depth, I would cut down to the wear bar. Assuming you are grooving the center lugs, you're wanting them to "wrap" around rocks directly under them (at least im my mind's eye), right? Once again, this is just my opinion, I would think that relieving this area of as much material as possible will allow the tread to "wrap" a little better. This is all based on how my pea brain rationalizes, factual information could be completely different.

I like that :)

I cut out the wear bars on my TSLs but only made the cuts 1/4" wide. I made all my cuts down to the carcass rubber. My "pea brain" thinking on grooving: I want as much rubber on the ground as possible, I didn't want to create a Bogger effect. My reason for grooving was to allow the whole carcass to flex more than the stock TSL grooves would allow. Therefore I went with deeper grooves and not as many of them. I have seen several "patterns". Lots of guys seem to like the "X" or double groove on the large outside lugs but I was just after flex and wanted to keep as much rubber as possible so I just cut the centers of those.

x2 on what CYJ said..

and then because my hand wasn't numb enough after doing 4 tires, I flipped the blade over and siped the center blocks...
