Group text don't download

Does the happen to anyone else, besides my wife and I? My smartphone will show a few unread texts on the main screen, but they aren't visible in the messenger app, sometime for days afterwards. This only happens when multiple people are on the text message distribution. We both have Motorola droid x phones from Verizon, default SMS app is set to Messaging, not Hangouts.

My Casio Commando used to do that. But it was what I call an "intro" smartphone, so it wasn't very good as a smartphone. I downloaded some messaging app that was better with group texts, but it had lots of issues and crashed a lot, so I went back to the stock app.
