I posted this on the craigslist but thought there "might" be this person here on NC4x4, we do have a wide talent base here!!

I am looking for the 'right' teacher for myself. I am thinking I want to do the lessons here at my office during lunchtime hours, but will need to be a bit flexible.

What I am wanting is two different things, first is the ability to play with the Praise Band at church / lead in Worship songs / play as I sing a solo/special. So this is probably more "chord and strum" based, with intros, endings, etc. (Ie, I don't really know what I am talking about / hoping to find an instructor who plays in their Praise & Worship Band at church)

Second - One of the things I want to do is play 'classical' guitar. To make a short story longer, my Dad "just" plays chords etc and wants me to really learn the right way and so do I. I started studying at home with the Esteban DVD series, which was enjoyable and I fully intended on finding local/live lessons.

I did that for a couple months, practice on my part was irregular - we lost our main player at church so the P&W band fell apart for now. So here I am 4-6 months later and ready to start again.

I am a professional in my late 30s / work near Brassfield Shopping Center on Battleground, and as I mentioned I think the easiest thing would be to do a weekly lesson during lunch break here. (That or really early in day, like 7:30am)

Not sure that is matters, but my guitar is a Sigma (Korean built Martin) acoustic that my dad gave me. At some point, electric would be interesting but I do not own one currently.

Pay - I figure it should be comparable to the lessons I am seeing on here / quotes I have seen at the shops in the area.

Too bad you're not in Raleigh... There's nothing lacking with a Sigma, should make a fine guitar to learn on.
The internet is LOADED with info now days. I taught myself back before internet existed. And you have someone to show you chords. I used a beginners book, my ears and the radio with a tape player to break songs down. People now days shouldn't have to pay for lessons in my opinion. If you're dedicated enough, the internet should be all you need.

im no pro or anything like that, but i played guitar for a year, then i switched to bass and play in a band now. but if you'd like sometime i can teach you to read tabs which will help you learn to play songs and stuff like that to get the feel of stuff. thats how me and alot of my friends though ourself

any recommendations for good websites or books? I've been playing bass for years & messing with guitars, but decided that I ought to learn all the fancy chords & stuff...

Youtube is great for learning any "one" thing, in other words I have a really cool lesson podcast on how to do Folsom Prison blues for instance, another on Jonny B Goode, another on Travis Picking, etc

When I was studying on my own (and Estebans DVD) I was doing ok / and I prob could keep going that way / but really want to know / learn the right way instead of piecemeal.

For example, "timing" is probably my biggest issue, one, being able to change from chord to chord quickly (practice is only known answer that I have been given) and then keeping myself on time instead of slowing down/up, etc. (I use my keyboard percussion stuff / helps...)

I guess the lessons are for all the little things that help when someone shows you, kinda like learning the computer for the first time. You CAN beat your head on the wall for a while, but at times it is easier to have an expert walk you thru it.

I do apprec the comments and any LINKS you have are appreciated, I have found some good stuff on tabs, etc.

One of the things I want to "figure out" is how I can look/see a song written in choir book and figure out the chords that go with it. I can SEE the vocal notes, but not sure how you determine the guitar chord that fits those sets of notes?

mysongbook.com look on the right right of the page. youll see a blue pic spinning, click it and go to the site and download that program, its called guitar pro.

then go to ultimate-guitar.com and look up tabs you want and it should say guitar pro in yellow, download the file then open it in guitar pro and you can hit the space bar. its tabs that play the beat and music to the songs to help you learn them. its how i learned to play bass

-edit- and also so you know, when you read the tabs its upside down

X2 on Guitar Pro. They are up to the 5'th version last time I updated. KILLER learning tool for any cover you ever imagined. And any instrument as well. Wished I had it back in the day.

Oh, Chromerunner hates it. LOL I love it so different strokes for different folks! I say don't take ANYBODY's advice until you check it out yourself. Pretty sure they have a free trial.

Guitar Pro and tab is fine and does serve a great purpose, but there is a lot more to playing guitar well, than just regurgitating stuff that someone else has written.

Uhhh, You got to have influence dude? Can't come right out of the chute writing original music? Unless you're like Bethoven or somebody?:flipoff2: The whole purpose of this entire thread is for a beginner...
I would consider EVERYBODY learning cover techniques to get them started.:shaking:

I agree wholeheatedly...That's why I said it does have it's place. I'm just saying that learning how to play "XXXX" song from Guitar Pro is not a replacement for learning proper technique or theory. I guess it just comes from being one of those that learned to play before the internet. I was not by any means saying not to learn covers

I will check this out, I have been watching a few items, like how to do Travis Picking - the guy said it was in every Chet Atkins song ever written, etc.

Would love to find a good instructor too, best of both worlds, so I can learn and know theory.

For example, you take a song or chord you already know and they say, lets play this in G chord instead of C...

I have some idea of what they are talking about, but knowing it for sure is the reason I want to get real lessons.
