Gulches? Anyone anytime soon?

i've never been to Gulches but it looks like a lot of fun... curious if anyone was planning to head that way in the coming month or so....
 
i am gonna try to get down there tis sunday. I haven't been there yet either.
 
i was planning on trying to make it down there sometime around the end of january or beginning of february

maybe we could get a group together

ive never been either, but their map looks to be pretty good
 
Need to set exact dates I have to schedule everything :shaking: but I am still planning to go this sunday

yep, if anyone goes soon please let us know what its like. they are doing a top truck type of competition series and a few buddies and myself are going down there march 1st for their first event. let me know if anyone else is planning on heading down and maybe we could consolidate some trailers for the ride there. its about 4 1/2 hurs from raleigh. -tripp :beer::beer:

i would love a spot a trailer that was headed to gulches (or any offroad park for tha tmatter) from the wilmington area :)
 
Anyone going to the competition in March? (Other than Tripp) Or has anyone done the competitions in the past? Tryin to get an idea of what we are getting into.

if you live more than 45 min. away it's not worth the drive. Unless it's raining then it would be an hour.:shaking:
has only 2-3 good trails.
tires are no challenge when dry difficult when wet & muddy.
some real deep mud pits from the signs I read (I don't do deep mud) but I didn't try them
When I got there I thought I heard banjo music & a pig squealing.:lol:
My take on the gulches is your better off in Uwharrie.:driver:
 
It is a very small park. 80 acres. But there is some gnarly areas that will break things. Given the spots are sometimes quick obstacles but iwas looknig at some of the hill climbs they have, they are pretty intense. I wont being breaking my jeep on those. I saw an FJ cruiser almost go on its lid over the weekend, but he realized he was gonig to spend alot of $$$$$ in repairs if he tried that again. But I would say it is a good park to at least go to and try it. Worthwhile for one trip and then decide if you want to go again. Like i said it is small, but you can have fun there. And if it is wet it gets real slick, found that out this weekend.
 
I had a couple of buddies go down to Gulches this past Sunday and their report was to not go back, they said it was a lot of mud and the trails were not all that good.

well THANK YOU BOTH for the report.... i was going to drive my jeep (no truck or trailer) and if i had driven 5-6 hours each way (no top, no doors, boggers) i would have been pretty ill, to say the least, if it wasn't worth the drive.
 
well i competed at Gulches in their first ever competition. i was 18 and i had fun. i was in D class with a fullsize bronco and dana 44 solid. the park is hard for big trucks. atleast then it was. i plan on doing the march 1 comp. with a almost stock f-150. in D class of course. i think the problem with the park is the trashy look. and when i first went there it wasnt to bad. but now i think that there are to many tails on a little piece of land. the owner is a nice guy tho and i give him credit for trying. it definitely has some hard ass hill climbs. i kinda like it better than uwharrie because u dont have to drive so much. and its more for the kids with not so much money. but i guess thats why i like it.
 
Regarding Gulches ... I live about an hour from there. We hit the park atleast once a month. This is the closet place for us to ride that is legal. Skip has done a great job with the park. This has been a learning experience for him. There have been a lot of trails that have been added since he opened it up. Our club was part of helping him make some trails in the beginning. It is a good place to ride if you want to cover a lot of area and obstacles. I will say that if it has rained, it makes for muddy conditions and it is hard to get traction. I know that there is going to be a write up in Crawl magazine. The next issue has gone to print and the one after that is already done. They were hoping for the following issue. leaving Raleigh 6pm friday 29th for march 1st comp. anyone going to that. we are reserving hotel room wednesday feb.21st if anyone wants to stay at same place and party some after event sat nigt before coming back sunday morning.
 
I did a ride along in a buddy's moderately lifted ZJ about a month ago and it was a WET day. There are definitely some tough trails in the park and I don't just mean tough for a ZJ. If you are willing to do the hard trails you will probably receive a few new dents if you still have a full bodied rig. It was really fun at times, but the mud made things frustrating for the driver at times also. The park seems good though. Almost the most efficient use of the available space as possible. I just got my ZJ back on the road so I'll probably drive it down there to take a look. I'm trying to get my group from Fayetteville to come also. We'll probly leave at 6am Sat. morning if anybody else from Fayetteville/Ft.Bragg area wants to convoy.
