What are the rules on buying a pistol at a gun show here in NC? I'm looking to get a walther p22, and am planning on going to the show in clt...just wondering if anyone knows what kind of hassle it might be.

You need to go by the sheriff's office in your county and get a permit first.

There is a waiting period for the permit, background checks and so forth.

Then you can hand the permit (and payment) to the vender at the show and take the gun home that day.

Unless something has changed recently. Which I wouldn't doubt.

Also if you're buying a rifle/shotgun you may have to wait up to 3 days. If you h ave a valid pistol permit, you can get your shotgun/rifle without possibly having to wait.

^in what situation would you have to wait? can they not just call it in there at the show?

You will need ID, a hand gun permit, and money. Go see Ed's Guns, he's usually on the right hand side as you enter not quite half way down the ilse. He will have the best price or will beat your best quote. Btw I've been looking at those P22's also. I have a Ruger 22/45 with the 5.25" bull barrel and a aimpoint site. Its fun to plick with, but way to large to carry. Besides I can't find a holster that fits good with the site mounted.

When you call it in you may have to wait up to 3 days for the approval of a shotgun/rifle. I purchased a rifle a few years ago and couldn't take it home that day. Store owner told me it could take up to 3 days if its busy. He called me back the next day with approval. I waited in the store for about 45 minutes.

when and where is the show I am interested in getting another rifle/shotgun.

The RULES at a gun show are no different than buying a handgun by legal means anywhere in the state.

1. You must be at least 21.

2. Have a permit and pass a background check (NCIC) from the Sheriff in the county that you live in. In some counties you have a waiting period in some you don't. (Randolph Co. where I live there is not a waiting period, pass the background check and pay $5 per permit.)

3. Present the seller of the handgun with your ID and permit then the seller calls in your info. If there is no problem then you buy the handgun. Even if you are buying a handgun from a non-dealer in NC you have to present the seller with a valid permit to buy the handgun. Its in the General Statues.

IIRC that is correct.

Oh and a third on Ed's Gun Shop.

Been dealing with him for years. Super nice and best prices hands down. Just look for the guy selling guns as fast as the people around him can fill out the paperwork. It's funny to see the other dealers standing around while he is selling like crazy.

Only thing to add to the above is if you have a CCW permit you do not need a hand gun permit.

I 3rd or 4th the reccomendation for Ed's Gun Shop. Purchased a hand gun from him several years ago.

I'll check out Ed's when I go.

I guess I'll call the sherrif's dept and see what needs to be done, get the pistol now, then after xmas order the suppressor and start on the form 4...so maybe by the time I get back from basic it will be approved.

They're going to tell you that you need to be 21.
