Got to put them on a house, never had to buy any before, everything I've bought has never needed them replaced. What can I expect to pay (average) per foot for some decent stuff? Anything I should consider size, material, etc?? I've got to put them on the house , a large hipped roof car port and a 1200 sq ft garage. Feels like I'm pricing diamonds I have no clue what this should cost.

Using recommendations from here, I just had all new gutters installed at home. I selected "The Gutter Shutter Co", &or you can hit www.freegutters.com. Their out of Charlotte, but cover up to near Lexington.

Get them black, not white. They look really good and don't stain like the white ones.
 
Go with 6" over 5" if it's capturing any amount of water. Don't piece it, find someone with a machine to come out and run it off in full lengths. Anybody with sense (and a machine) can do gutters so you don't have to pay an outrageous contractor. And of course, no gutters at all outlasts anything with "0" maintenance if you have a good place to not have any.
And I'm a big fan of the galvanized expanded metal gutter guard. Harder to put on but it will last forever compared to the plastic crap that only lasts 10-15 years max before it starts crumbling. Made in USA as well. Only downfall with the galvanized is that it don't work below freezing but that could be a good thing also. Had mine on 5 years now and it still looks like it did new.
 
$1/linear foot seems about right for formed aluminum one-piece....??

x2 on the gutter guards, but I hate whatever the fawk we've got on our house. I think it's aluminum, and it's got little holes punched in it. Works okay in a light rain, but the little holes get clogged with crap, and when it rains hard, the rain sheet flows right over the guard without going in the gutter.

Also, make sure you're getting the water from the downspouts at least 10ft away from the house. The further away you can pipe it, the better.

I would agree if you have black roof. Grandparents switched recently and its not noticable after a few days.

x2 on 6" gutters. Id rather have larger then not enough.

I had these on my house when I bought it and they were just installed. Talk about cheap... They leaked at every joint so I took them down and caulked them back together. Then they busted the first winter they got stopped up by the swelling of the ice inside. My gutter dude quoted that "Plastic is for toys, not gutters on a house".

I had these and definitely to not recommend...
 
Our contractor used QI Renn (373-0099) for the gutters on our house when it was built. We went with dark brown color to match the rest of the trim. We have only been in the house a little over a year, but they work good. They are all sloped properly, and seem sturdy. I rented a trencher and buried pipe for all the downspouts. Everything is working properly.

We just hired A-1 Copper Roofing (345-6518) to clean our gutters. Our house is surrounded by large trees, and the gutters completely filled up with leaves this past fall. He did a great job, and I would use him again for anything gutter related.

I'm still trying to figure out a gutter cover/helmet solution so I don't have to pay to have them cleaned every year. I had one company come out and quote us $9,000 for gutter helmets!:eek: I really prefer the helmet style over the perforated style. We had helmets on our old house, and they worked great, but you do have to have the surface wiped down maybe once a year or so for them to work properly. My father and I installed some plastic perforated style ones from Lowes on his garage many years ago. Like Shawn said, debris tends to get caught in the holes and then they don't work very well.

This is a similar situation to me. I am tired of cleaning out gutters every month. A friend did gutter installation in the past and mentioned they used a foam insert similar to pool noodles to keep the gutters clean. He claimed they worked well, but could not tell me who made them. I also suspect they would get clogged similar to the perforated ones.

Mine are white and it irritates the piss out of me to look up and see stained gutters. I've pressure washed them, sprayed them, whatever. short of scrubbing all of them with a Magic Eraser, they stay stained.

Did you have trouble finding a trencher that would leave a 5-6" wide hole?

Fun fact for anybody considering piping their downspout discharge: one 4" smooth pipe with 1/8"/ft of fall will support a bit over 1000sf of roof area (at 7.2 inches of rain per 15 minutes, which covers a 100yr storm for most all of NC).

Nope. The Home Depot stores around here have incredible tool rental business. They had a big walk behind model with rubber tracks that came on its own trailer. It worked awesome, but it wasn't cheap.
 
My father in law did gutters for 20+ years before we got into metal roofing. We still have the 5" gutter machine. We are really busy with big commercial jobs right now but if you wanted to do them yourself I could probably bring the machine over and run off what you need. We buy all our gutter coil and acc from abc supply. And as far as cost I think around a dollar a foot should cover the gutter, hangers, elbows, down spouts,and screws.
 
Bassett "K-Guard"... not cheap, but you'll never need to "clean them out", even living in a forest of oaks and they will repair any damages (even those *I* caused) for free...
