Check out this steering on a Jeep I saw on ebay. I've never seen anything with a long travel steering shaft with the box mounted to the axle.

Freightliner semi trucks with rack and pinion steering have the rack mounted to the axle and use a long travel steering shaft just like this.

BTW - i did some digging on our Isuzu Board and that over-grown Trooper got torn apart from our guys. I just missed the thread.
