Where's the best place to find hand throttles? I want to put one on my shifter for those sticky situations when 3 feet are needed but you only got 2. I'd kinda like the bicycle style not to the knob style. thanks.

I paid like $5 for the whole setup from my local bike shop. Just ask if they have any used hand brakes or new take offs and buy a few feet of the cable with ends. They gave me a new brake and I paid for the cable.

X2... Ask if they have used brake levers, they work well for this application.

I had 15 bucks in my setup.

this is what i was really thinking about. that way i can meter the gas rather than keep it set in one position.

What ever you do, DO NOT tell them what you are using it for.

I had a bike shop refuse to sell me parts because I just mentioned it. I just went to another shop a little less uptight and they actually thought it was a cool idea.

was years ago, but I find bicycle shops still to be somewhat prissy and uptight

The WebWheeling writeup mentioned above is mine. I used a derailleur shifter. It is non-indexed and holds at whatever I set it too. The nice thing about that is that I can maintain the engine RPM when airing up or winching without having to do anything other than set it. I dunno if that is possible or not with the brake lever. Plus the shifter isn't very bulky.

if you wanna go the brake lever route i have come decent avid brake levers i'll sell ya for uber cheap.. just pm me if interested

well, i didn't have a chance to go to the bike shop yesterday but I did happen to be swinging by Wally-world. In their bike section they have gear shift cables and brake cables in one pack (pack of 4) for $4.23. I figured I can scrounge a shifter or brake lever off of an old bike at the house.

Just a small update. Went to Pro-Bikes in Asheville on Haywood Rd off of 240. The guy hooked me up with a gear selector for $10. So, thus far, I have $10+$4.23 = ~$15 in a hand throttle.

the gear shift is a Shimano and it clicked. I took the the clicker out and it's not that stiff so I think it may work for the original use. I'll post some pics later.

I used a push-pull hand throttle, like PTO equiped vehicles have (and others for idle control). You can push the release button and pull or push for big changes, or turn the knob for fine adjustment. Take a look in a big truck yard for used parts. Our church's Thomas bus has the same thing for warm-up. I have mine mounted on the dash in front of the shifter, it's quick and easy to adjust it, or hit the red "panic button" to take it back down to an idle real quick.

Just another option, FWIW.
