It turned over fine just kept stalling and wouldn't keep an idle. This is on an 01 ford excursion with the v10 84,000 miles.

I tryed to start it about 6 times. It would do ok if I kept my foot on the gas but if I took it off it would stall.

The last time I cranked it I reved it up to about 3k and it held the idle good after that. Went to drive to get lunch and it did fine. Cranked right back up after turning it off.

What do you guys think?

thanks,

Noah

Air filter just replaced fuel filter not sure. I have not replaced the fuel filter since I have had it. So maybe that's the problem.

You said the air filter was just replaced. Check the Mass Air Flow Sensor on the hose after the filter. If it is not plugged in good....sometimes they wont do right. It happened to my 97 F-150

'Tis the season for battery death! I know it started fine, but I have seen situations where the battery had enough juice in it to crank the vehicle fine, but not keep in running when idling immediately after cranking. Battery problems are going to be worse in the coldest or hottest weather, too. Some alternators don't produce enough current at low RPM's to keep a vehicle's main systems running. I killed a battery in a GC one time, and had to hold my foot on the pedal for 5 or 10 minutes before the battery had charged enough for the thing to idle. Alternately, some alternators don't start to charge immediately. This is usually in internally-regulated alternators. They need to be spun past a certain point before they start to produce their own excitation voltage.

Either way, I wouldn't blame the alternator. That's just my way of explaining why I'm suspicious of the battery. It wouldn't keep the ignition system running immediately after cranking, but it would once the motor had been revved. It could be the alternator, too, but batteries are much cheaper and easier to check!
