harlan (Black Mountain) vs Coal Creek (Windrock)

We've had some ladies of the night wandering through camp, and we've traded dairy hut funnel cake fries for a jar of moonshine, but never robbed...

It’s all a matter of personal opinion but the main point I’m making as far as Evarts is people see that dumpy little town and assume they’re gonna get robbed and I just haven’t experienced that or anything shady, and haven’t even heard of it happening in years of going there
I have always found the people that fuss about Evarts are the ones that have never stayed there. I've never met a more wonderful people in my entire life. People that have nothing and will give you what little they do have if they think you need it.

100% agree.

Same here. Always have stayed at the “hut” and never had an issue. Gas, food, friendly folks and trails right there. Even had a local welder dude remove a broken stud out of a d60 front axle with his welder to save the day @upnover.

Larry's welding? He welded up motor mounts for my samurai while it was in the campground using my gooseneck as an engine hoist. He also made up a driveshaft for my brother that would "get you through the weekend" which is still in his Toyota like 5 years later.

Ol’ Larry the welder. What a stand up guy, he’s been mighty helpful over the years.

Wait there's ladies of the night in the campground? I may have to check out the evarts side next time I go!!

The one thing you do miss staying on the evarts side is the campground guy at Putney telling you all the stories of people flipping off the mountain on SXS and ATVs and being maimed with a straight face and a calm demeanor. The dudes awesome, but it's a min 30min conversation and at least a dozen casualties that he talks about!!

Good to know about Larry's welding!!

Yep, that was me! After Larry showed me and @3DCrawler how to remove the broke stud, I have done many since then with my ready welder. For me, and for the record, I have never stayed in the Putney side, I prefer to be behind the Dairy hut. Many times, years ago, I'd have a spaghetti dinner for a large group while up there. I'd feed our group, and anyone in the campground that wanted some, then make plates and take them up to the Dairy hut and to the Marathon. So now even after so many years since I have made this, I am called the spaghetti man, and am always asked if I am going to be making it. I have got to know a lot of the locals and in the 20 plus years of going up there, have never had an issue. I like not having to prepare meals and do dishes. I go to the Marathon for breakfast, Choice o meat, couple eggs my way, a biscuit and gravy, and a bottled OJ for around $6, and the the Hut has a decent choice of food for dinner. I always just keep it simple these days, and keep as much time in the woods as possible.

Windrock is HUGE! Some places are a couple hours away, depending on how fast you can, and will drive. IMO, Windrock has much more difficult obstacles. Just came back from there. Could not ask for anyone more accomidating than the lady was at Windrock Gap campground. I tow a guy back to the parking lot, and then drove him up to Windrock campground, WOW, that place has exploded in size. MANY more cabins have been added!

Windrock Gap is where I stay at too. The owners are awesome and bust ass to keep their campground in great condition.
I agree that Windrock has more to offer in terms of riding (size-wise), but for some reason Harlan takes my heart every time.

In terms of difficulty, I'd put Harlan at a higher level than Windrock. If you count Creampuff, Pony Hill, Your Turn and many others, I'm not sure Windrock has more complex obstacles.

Never been to Windrock, so can't speak to it.

As for Harlan, Po White Boy ftmfw, hands down, all day, etc. over Putney. I've never stayed behind the Dairy Hut (South Evarts RV Park), but I'm finna find out what the North Evarts RV Park is all about before too long.

Putney cabins are fine and they are nice, but I just prefer being closer to where the majority of the good stuff is at in Harlan. I do think you deal with more of the local-ish SxS crowd on the Putney side that rides up and down that main drag all...night...long ::insert old man voice:: blaring their loud (ghey) music, shining their elevendy light bars/pods and kickin up all the dust. So if that's an issue to you, consider accordingly.

The Evarts side is a lot quieter, in my opinion, even if you do have to deal with some of the trash (which I've personally never much experienced). Just make sure you're packin on the trails, I reckon...

Guns are illegal in the park at Harlan.

Hell no. I'm just relaying info.

Concealed is concealed…;)

Edit: I never felt the need for a gun up there in or out of the park people wise. But this one time, around 2am broke down in pitch black dark I was glad to have guns while we waited for my buddy to return with parts and we could hear large things not far from us in the woods. They got bears and more things to worry about than meth heads lol

Never been to windrock. Hoping to sxs up there this fall. Harlan used to be my jam and we'd go every couple months. Always stayed on the evarts side. Rented houses, rv behind the dairy hut and also the cabins (sheds) above buddies. Moonshine is always available if old Tommy-doo is actually still alive. Sells it right out of his trunk, drunk as hell and right in front of local police.

Larry's welding is legendary and also built a driveshaft for a friend that outlasted the rest of the jeep. Charged us $20. We gave him $100 and made his day. On another trip I fubared factory stamped uppers on my tj. Was building new arms in the driveway at the rental house. Larry stops by cause he saw me welding and asked if he could help. I needed holes drilled accurately on a press. He took the arms to his shop and showed up 15 min later with them COMPLETELY finished. Got to be the best guy ever to do maintenance at the mine all day then come home and help out the tourists.

Had a cell phone stolen waaaay back in the day (flip phone) before evarts even had cell service. That was ironic.

Ohhhh the ladies of evarts! I'm pretty sure you can get whatever your kink is for a carton of smokes.

Man I miss that place lol.

Those same control arms served me well on many trips to Harlan and were still going strong the day I sold it!
