I am pleased to announce that the Harlan County Outdoor Recreation Board signed a 25 year lease on the Black Mt. off road park yesterday. This was made possible because of the permit fee system.

This long term lease also makes it possible for us to receive federal grants and coal severence tax money that we could not use before because of the lack of a long lease. We already have approx. $78,000.00 of those monies that we can use for trail maintenance. Work on the trails started today.

The permit money can be used as matching funds for the grant money and for the everyday expenses that occur. We also have a grant in the works for total new signage for the park and for new trails to be completed.

We also have a grant that will be used to divert water from the Damnation trail and for some culverts to improve water quality at the park.

I want to thank all of our many visitors from N.C. and this board for your support of our park. I think you will like the way the park is headed and you will see a big difference in years to come.

Thanks again,

Ken Crider

Can't wait to go back!!! This is great!

That is awesome news...I have never been to harlan but def. want to go there and watch/ride.....I have heard the trails there are not friendly to vehicles that are not "setup" if you know what i mean.......I could be wrong but thats what i have been told.

One of the great things about Black Mountain OHV is that you can ride all you want to, I'm talking miles and miles, in a stock vehicle! There are vicious obstacles too but you don't have to take that route and you can still get close enough to watch many of them from your stock rig!

Well thats good to know...I always have heard that to have a good time you had to have a well built rig. My rig has been a very slow process, as most peoples are, so its good to know that I wouldn't haul it from Charlotte up there and not be able to really ride any trails.

Excellent News JC...keep bringin' the Sunshine...

That's great news Ken. We spoke to you about this when me and some friends were there last month and i'm glad it's all done and signed. Looks like I'll be making that trip for years to come.

I'm glad you guys got it renewed. I hope some of the monies go to a better bath house in the campround.

Thats some sweet ass... Southern shine & crawl hopefully see yall there!?

I hope some of the monies go to a better bath house in the campround.

Being a regular at Black Mountain I know for a fact that the bath house in the campground behind the Dairy Hut can be a problem, especially on busy weekends.

That said, I noticed during the April Fools Toyota Crawl that they had posted signage warning people not staying in the campground and the bath house was visited regularly that weekend by cleaning personnel. The bath house was in the best shape Sunday morning I have ever seen it on a Sunday, but it was still marginal for someone that is picky at all :(

I too would like to see better facilities. Hopefully in time some of the funds will go toward new bath houses, staffing and security.

I think we are talking about two different campgrounds. I'm talking about the one at the base of the mountain. I think it was called Harlan county campground. The cabins were nice, but the bath house was small and cramped.

Yeah, that's on the Putney, KY side. That bath house is of new construction, pre-fab modular, but it is small, cramped and crowded!

Seeing as how that is a private enterprise, I can't see that they will be included in any improvements that come from fee or grant money dispersal.

OK, so I guess I need to get more info on the campground you are refering to.

yes that campground is private.

the north evarts campground has a brand new bathroom and shower facility. go check it out.
