I will be going to Harlan in a couple of weeks and was wondering what way you gusy go. Are there any roads to avoid towing the xj up there?

Dude we've got to get up together sometime. I pass your shop all the time but never have time to stop and introduce myself when you're there.

So it would be better to go through ashville instead of Boone?

My one trip through Boone made me car sick, and I wasnt towing a trailer, nor have I EVER been car sick. I just went to Harlan last month by those directions, and it was cake.

The only good ways that involve going through Boone would be to either take 321 to I26 and on into Kingsport, curvy, slow road around Watauga Lake or to take 91 and 58 from Mountain City TN to Abingdon VA and hit I81s and pick up on my original directions (I actually like this way but it's about 30 minutes slower than 52/77/81s for me but 91 is a cool road, only bottleneck is going through Damascus on 58). DO NOT under any circumstance attempt 421 from Boone to Bristol!!! Hilly, curvy, terrible road!!!
 
Thanks guys that answers it then. I will be coming form Hartsville,sc so I was thinking of going the way I went to Mountain City but now I will not. It looks like going through ashville will be best. TY
