I am not much of a tent camper and I don't have a RV, so cabin/house renting is for me. I have been to Harlan a couple times and always stayed at the Black Mountain Cabin Rentals. What other places should I look into? What about the cabins at the Harlan County Campground? How is the Putney trailhead? I have never been over there, so not sure about the access etc. Let me know your thoughts.

We drove over to the Putney trail head last year just for fun. The cabins and bathrooms look nice and clean but its a long way from most of the trails we typically run. I think it took 45 minutes or longer to get to putney from the middle rock garden.

wow, didn't know it was that far

It's far and the last time I was there the trail was a little sketchy in places. It's been a couple years since I was on that side so things might have changed since. Also, I don't think you can ride around town in your untagged rig like you can in Evarts.

The Putney cabins are super nice but it's 45 min. In a truck to get back to little Jager but there is lots to do on that side also tail gate is one hell of a hill

A couple years back I built a new cross member for a sammi kinda like the kong thingy. My buddy had broken the factory mounts. The guys w me and Larry had no idea wtf I was doing. Years later its still holding strong. Larry IS the man. To date I've never seen such clean cuts with oxy/act.

Larry helped us chop and weld a super duty truck driveshaft to make a replacement for Barry this past August. He mentioned he had that apartment for rent when we said we were staying in the cabins behind the gas station, but we like to party some after wheeling all day so I'd hate to disturb him, LOL. Buddy still rents the cabins BTW

I have stayed in the cabins at Putney. They are definitely a bit nicer than the Black Mountain Rentals cabins, which I have also stayed in a few times. I do not mind the extra trail riding to get around up there but I usually go out and stay out all day so being close to the cabin is not a big deal, and my rig is tagged so street driving is not an issue.

As others said the Putney side cabins are super nice. Specially if you get the ones with hot tubs to loosen up the back after riding all day! However, I got tired of the long ride into the trails. You take the same long winding path in and out every time and it just gets old quick. If you have an issue and have to limp out it could be tuff, compared to Evarts side having a main trail that you could drag a trailer in if you really needed to. Gas and food are easier to get to on Evarts side, and not to mention Larry. Wow, what a nice guy. Just a retired old man that likes to tinker and help out the wheeling crowd and anyone else. He fixed us right up after a carrier failure once. Even had RTV sealant for the diff cover!

dont forget the "piece of meat" sandwich from the dariy hut for $1.20
I don't think I have had the pleasure of indulging said delicacy. It's probably possum.

We always camp right behind the dairy hut. Place your order, go back to the cooler and drink another beer, go back up the hill to eat.

You in a hurry? Harlan is a vacation for me.
Not in a hurry but when u wait over an hour for a burger and fries it cuts into your riding time.
