Having not been there before, I wanted to hear about the options, I've heard of multiple places..

At the minimum, there's gotta be a shower facility. I'd also be down with a very nearby hotel if it's cheap enough. There's alot to be said for sleeping in A/C...

We stayed behind the Dairy Hut last weekend, has power/water/showers. It's o.k., just leary of having my stuff leave on its own.

I'd be interested in finding a cabin to stay in next time..

If its just you and your wife I'd say go for Black Mtn. Cabins in Evarts. Nice cabins with all the goodies and its on the side of the park that you want to be on.

Ive seen the 'behind the dairy hut'mentioned a few times but no real name or number so as I posted in the other thread, i booked

http://www.harlancountycampground.com

they also have some cabins to rent there, no idea on price, prolly better if multiple people shared one..

also ive been keeping an eye on the temps and it drops into the mid 70s at night, which is great sleeping weather.. Maybe it will be higher that week dono..

edit... midnight - 2am have been in the 68-74 range for the last week.. still need that A/C ???

Where ever you stay lock your shit up...we had some stuff stolen and have heard from others that stuff disappears around there.

Here's a link. Very reasonably priced, we had a large group up at Harlan in February, I think we rented about 6 or 7 cabins and had at least three times that number of people staying. We had 4 in our 12x20 alone, and I wouldn't say it felt cramped at all. You will need to bring a stove, table, and etc if you want to cook, but they have small TVs with Cable and DVD players!

That's the same place as mentioned in the post right above this one too.

Stop at the gas station, and ind out about the cabins they rent above the store.... They are nice, A/C, showers, wood floors, etc... I think the price was reasonable too, though I was moochin off Andy so I don't know er sure :)

Only thing bad about the cabins is that they are at the top of a steep ass gravel road that you pretty much need 4 wheel drive to get up there. Not much room for parking bigger trailers up there either. When we were there earlier in the year, we had to leave 2 truck/trailers parked down in the dirt lot next to the store. Andy's truck was the only one that could get up there towing his trailer. Everybody just loaded there stuff in the back of his truck and up we went. Wasn't too big of an inconvenience. More of worried if I was gonna come back to smashed truck windows and stuff missing. Other than that, the cabins are a great and comfortable place to stay.

Good point, the only guy with us that towed had a 4x4 tow rig...

Oh god, there are few things I hate worse in life than thieves... Think it's locals, or wheelers?

Locals....they stole from the police chief too...
..."Twice, but they got them little bastards"
When are we going to start the book of Harlan quotes?
Rich, Just tell everybody you're from Jones Creek and they won't mess with ya:uzi:

The campground behind the Dairy Hut is $10 a tent or camper a night. It has hot showers and they just come around and collect the money. It's pretty much first come first serve.

As far as having things stolen, it's mostly some of the local kids. They sometimes pickup stuff they can carry off easily (this is the case about anywhere you go).

The Putney side has nice cabins and is good for large groups and he takes reservations. I grew up there so I know quite a bit about the area, if you need anything else PM me.

I gave George (TiredIronGRB) a call and he filled me in on the camping areas around Evarts, it sounds like it will work out ok. I'm still a little nervous about the local theifs, but I'll have the sleeper to lock junk up inside..

I'm thinking a fence charger might be the answer for a nice don't touch security system :)

We leave our fullsize spares, tools, coolers, ect sitting our truck beds near the trail head all the time and haven't had any trouble yet. Not saying someone won't steal something but I doubt it's any more common than anywhere else.

Well after some additional thought, I will still be staying at the Putney campground.. Sorry if this means I miss out on the group bit.. But this is my first trip out after a long time in the garage and its as much about camping as the riding.. The extra 10-15 min on easy/moderate trail to get to the Evarts side will be as fun as the rest of the day..

Anyone else is welcome to join me up there.. or swing by in the evening to toast marshmallows on the camp fire or have a cold  .

Its decent and convenient to the trail head. I had no issues with thieves on the April Fools Run.

I've stayed twice behind the Dairy Hut. No problems missing anything. I left my camping/cooking stuff out the whole time I was there.

Its good to hear all the good reports but if you check out the KYMC board people having stuff stolen is a pretty common occurance up there. To all of you that haven't had anything stolen while there, I hope your luck continues. I've stayed at nearly every place possible on both sides of the park with good luck untill last wknd. It was partially my fault since I left my stuff in the back of the truck but I pitty the fool should I ever find out who got my stuff:kaioken:.
I think you'll be fine wherever you stay as long as you're smart about what you leave out.

I'll be at Putney, too.
