So I have been fishing at the Outer Banks for many years, but I have never taken my jeep. We always rent an ocean front house and just fish in front of it. This year the house we rented is in a OHV area, and an access ramp is very close. So I am looking for advice if it is really worth towing my jeep down there. I guess I could always just drive my truck on the beach but stiff wall E rated tires are not the best for airing down in the sand.

So give me your thoughts.

If you do I think they now require a permit to drive on the beach, local shops should have info on this. Also air down your tires! I was always able to find better spots by riding the beach and looking for holes when the tides change.

Yeah I read that a 7 day pass is now $50. Definitely airing down if I take the jeep. I have a set of TSLs and a set of BFG ATs, which would be better in the sand?

You will need to watch a video and purchase a pass. Mud tires don't help in the sand, they just dig quicker if spinning. Lower air pressure increases surface area of contact. Stiffer sidewalls require even less air. I have seen two wheel drive trucks manage with highway tires but with very little air . The sidewalls were pinched between the rim and sand. Lighter vehicles have a better time and with larger and wider tires and do not need to air down. If you are on the sand and start spinning STOP ! and let some air out of the tires. Lockers help a whole lot as well. My suburban will go anywhere with all terrrains @ 25 psi. If I want to tow someone I go down to 20psi. If I get into some really dry loose sand with no bottom Ill go 12 or 15 psi. I used to use some load range B Michelin MS and they were great without letting air out which made it easier to ride on the pavement.

Use an AT tire on sand if you have a choice between that and a swamper.

I drive my F350 on the sand a lot and air down to 20psi and it does great everywhere. Take whatever is easiest.

Suggest mistake I've seen is people not airing down. It's awesome driving on the beach! They are working on getting more beach open to for ohv, I believe they did open more. I'm a member of ncbba and they have great tips in their website.

I had thought of the shovel but I hadn't thought about the 2x6, that is a great idea

these pictures were taken at Ft.Fisher but I went out on 7.50 wide pizza cutters aires down to 15 psi. That soft sand worked the hell out of the ole gal but no stickage for us.Passed 2 full size trucks burried up to their frames and all I could do was drive around them, smile, and wave good bye.

I'm out there once in a while, that's about the only way I go to the beach.
