Haw River at Hwy 64

Just passed over it again today taking the kid back to State after the holidays. Figured it was pretty shallow and no real fishing to speak of, but I’ve always enjoyed rock jumping and exploring in places like that. Figured if there’s any fishing around there it could make for a good time.

Oh yeah, you can take a Mepps spinner on an ultralight in there and wear out the panfish and bass. I have been in there rockhopping and pool casting a few times. My B.I.L. said they got on the white bass in there last spring and slayed them. Heard some striper rumors in there also but can't attest to those (yet..). Worth wasting an hour or two in there for sure.

Springtime fishing there can be awesome. A jighead w a white curly tail or small sassy shad body will kill it. I would recommend at least 8lb mono or braid as the fish/rocks will break smaller lines. It's also tricky to walk/jump among the rocks/chutes when the water is flowing fast. When the WB are spawning you can catch them on every cast anywhere from the canoe launch to upstream of the bridge. I would keep a close eye on any children as the water is swift and anyone can get hurt slipping or falling on the rocks. I've also caught some fish w small buzzbaits dragging them in the rock channels. If the water is running high and muddy it sucks, but you can still catch the WB below the rapids where the lake meets the river.

Fishing now that’s something I can get into quick.
