I am going to get a winch. The questions is: I really cant afford a winch with the synthetic rope but I like the look of a hawse fairlead alot better. What is the main reason you shouldn't use one with the steel rope. I dont go wheeling very often so it is sad to say that it will hardly ever be used. Will I be ok with the hawse.

i have no personal experience but I have heard that on a side pull it will ruin the soft aluminum hawse. the cable is much harder than the hawse. but worse case scenario if it does; you are out 25 bucks.

Something is going to give under friction that hawse leads have. Most hawse are AL and will cut and gouge when steel cable rubs against them. Likewise if it was made of strong steel it would cut the cable. Thats why they have the roller leads to reduce the friction between the lead and the cable. The leads are not too expensive, but if I was you I would look for someone that has an used one and get it cheap, then switch to the hawse when you get your sync cable.

The aluminum hawse is for a synthetic rope. A steel cable would cut it like butter. You can get a steel hawse. I am debating getting a steel hawse to make my approach angle better because it has a lower profile.

Nothing wrong with using a steel hawse with a steel cable. Looks much better than rollers and has been used for decades on stuff much heavier than a jeep without problems.

What's your winch budget I bought an Engo e10000s for $425 shipped today that has synthetic line.
