Anyone got it ?

I recently got a new head unit for my Runner, has built in HD radio, and a USB port for the iPod ( the main reason)

Having just installed the unit, ( JVC KD-HDR50 ) I'm fairly impressed, having only messed with it for about an hour, the stations I have found do come in pretty clear, time will tell how it performs on the move.
.....though it does recieve ANY radio station much better since I installed a new power antenna mast ( Thanks John  )
The iPod hook up is nice, it charges the pod while it also controls the unit, play lists and the like. Oh, and it has a CD player in it.....

If any one is interested, I have a Pioneer FH-P4000 double DIN AM/FM/XM/CD/TAPE head unit I'll let go REAL cheap, it works, just didn't like the look nor that it dominated the dash. ( Direct plug in to a '96-'02 Runner ) A 6pack would take it...

As of now, I'm not terribly impressed with HD radio. I bought a cheap Dual CD player to replace one I had in my Saturn, and it had the HD tuner built in. It was the cheapest car CD player with a built-in HD tuner, and it had a $50 rebate that, of course, I didn't send in. Anyway, the available material isn't that good yet. I expected more obscure stuff, and so far, not much. I find a LOT of dead spots while driving, and unlike standard FM that goes a little fuzzy, you lose audio altogether. Mine also conflicts with the FM broadcast if there's a simulcast in HD. WFDD does this terribly. There's an occasional echo or short screech from the station for no apparent reason. Hopefully it'll get better, as my buddy who works at WFDD seems to think it's the future of radio.

for the money that jvc you purchased is the best deal on hd out there. I sell a ton of these, they have a lot of features for a very good price, and they arent junk......cough cough dual cough...lol. There are add on hd tuners out there that you can add to exsisting stereos but they are expensive. Id get used to the hd cause i dont think xmsirius is gonna be sticking around much longer.

That's my buddy's opinion. Pay radio is on it's way out. And I kinda like Dual. I've had two of them now, and they've actually impressed me. Bear in mind, I run them in a Samurai. I'm putting the cheapest shit I can deal with in there. If it doesn't get stolen, the Uwharrie dust will probably kill it. Suprisingly, they've held up well, and sound good enough for a doorless rig. Yeah, they're trash, but I'd take Dual over Roadgear or Jensen.

19 million people might disagree with that...

they might if FCC filings indicating a required 29/month fee to become profitable are accurate

damn wish I'd seen that unit a month ago, I got a Kenwood that is identical in every way for only a little less $$, except no HD radio - they make you buy a spendy add-on unit for it. Love the USB port on front, just plug in 4 gig flash drive... no more CDs or extrernal player.

I bought a phase linear from auto zone, no hd but it has the usb and will take a sd card. Only cost $100

that 19million obviously isnt paying the bills though. Xm Sir really kicked themselves in the ass by whoring their products out at every convienience store, walmart, truckstop, hell even the barber shop sells them. It took the value out of the product, and made it cheap. I hope it turns around and they stick it out, cause im constantly making money on the installs that people fuck up.

Im glad you are having better luck than i did. I carried them in the shop here for about 2 days. The first 4 that i put in were doa. I picked them up as a cheap radio for my wholesale car dealers, and i couldnt even get them out the door before they give me problems. I sent the other 20 some radios back. I have a jvc that i sell that has usb front jack and aux on the front for under a 100 bill, hopefully thats cheap enuf! lol

Jason, I need to come check out your shop sometime. Does anybody reputable still sell a deck with an SD slot?

I dont access to anything except the new pioneer avic navigation decks. I do have a very high end eclipse with a sd slot that i may be willing to sell though. Its a few years old. If you wanna ck it out google cd8455.

You still have that deck?

I imagine it would be a plug and play for a 97 Landcruiser too?

I'll take it if you have it. What kind of beer do you like?

My CD player just crapped out this week!

It will be when you unplug the bypass harness from the oem amplifier. I think it is located directly below the oem radio, similar to the 4runner.

On that note, I noticed when I installed the new unit that there were 2 antenna cables, one standard size, the other about half the size, never seen this before, standard size plugged into the rear of the unit, the small is hanging in the breeze, whats the deal with that ? does the factory unit use that ?

Had the same thing on my 02 Ttrooper. IIRC it's some kind of phased antenna array. The OEM radeo picked up great but when I installed the aftermarket unit the reception was terrible.

I know GM used a bastard small antenna that made life suck for about 1 year and a half until adapters hit the market (this is going back to 96-97) other than that nothin useful to add

Thats whats called a diversity antenna. It def helps the oem unit pick up better. Most oem decks are tuned to the antenna similar to the way a cb antenna is tuned, so when changing to an aftermarket usually the reception will be worse. That kinda sucks but what do ya do?

Now pretty much every automotive manufacter uses some kind of ant adapter. I dont understand why they change simple shit like that. theres absolutely nothing wrong with the standard motorola plug, but instead these manuf waste money on stupid crap like retooling for ant ends. No wonder they are broke. Btw none of the korean cars do this.....kia, hyundai...ect, they keep shit simple and they are making money.

I have friends in the Raligh area, I was thinking about going up there some time soon anyway, and also maybe to RK's in Roxboro. Me and the dog love road trips.
