I've mentioned before my wife doesn't want to work full time when baby #2 arrives, that's 2.5 months away. Well, as luck would have it, our church asked her to be the director of youth programs, 20hr/wk job with 8 of those being Sunday and the rest from home. Yay, go wife...bad part is, she has been working primarily for our insurance. Full Family, we're still paying $1200/month out of pocket every month. They cover 90% of her $800/mo premium. I could sign up for my company's plan...but in comparison to my wife's, it's garbage. So ultimately, $1,500-2,000/month in insurance premiums sounds like I should be able to do a lot with self-insuring, but also know the dollar goes further in a group plan. So who/what/where do I start looking??? In my experience setting up group plans, 98% of insurance presentations are slimy and bull shit jargon. I want to be able to tell someone, this is what I have...this is what I like...tell me where I'm underinsured...don't add any riders I'll never use...and tell me a price.

Not much to add. We pay $2,100/month for our 4.
Used to be on the high deductible plan which was "only" $800/month for our 4. It wen up to $1,600 this year and the break even was gone.

Looked into the Obamacare portal briefly. However enrollment dates didnt align with our group plan. And buying it cheaper on the potal didnt qualify as an enrollment event so I would have been forced to pay double for 6 months.

We went on an HSA plan for this year. First 14k for the both of us is OOP. So far, we've spent maybe 500 on services. Getting older, but both still healthy.

Because it's a co-op.

And if I have an irregular income are my premiums irregular as well?
My electricity is through a co-op as well. But I dont pay more per KWH because I live in a bigger house.

Unfortunately my wife has a chronic condition that costs us. When we were on the high deductible plan we ran through the high deductible usually by this time every year.

Because "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" - Karl Marx

That would be relevant if it were a government-run plan, but it's a Christian healthcare cost-sharing plan.

I've entertained the idea of an HSA. I pretty much need to be dying to go to a doctor, so would work for me. My wife on the other hand, is a hypochondriac and has probably gone to the doctor to determine if she has testicular cancer before. Plus well check ups and shots for kids...I'd probably pay the entire deductible plus monthly premiums just about the time it resets every year.

I know some folks that are on this:

medishareplan.com

I actually have looked in to that in the past 3-4 months so I could come off my wife's plan, my CEO uses it. At the time, I ran it by an 'insurance guy'...he said it wasn't at all what I was looking for, so I stopped digging. Probably time to double back.

I never dug into it or needed it, but you can deposit money in your own medical saving plan, & it's probably tax deductible. It's similar to a 401, but it can only be used [withdrawals] for medical expenses. Just a thought fwiw.
