Hearing aids?

A good boss would go all out!
My mom has about 25k in each side of her head. Cochlear implants for the win!

Soon after her surgeries, and after taking a few weeks to have new frequencies tuned into them, she called me ( phone calls were futile before implants) to inform me that she was trying to tracked down a noise that had kept her awake all night. She'd been hearing water drip, and had checked every faucet, but couldn't find a leak.
Said it was driving her crazy, and wanted me to drive over to find the noise. She had tears of joy when I got there. She had found the "drip" herself. It turned out to be the CLOCK ticking. She had never heard that before.
She'd gone from 95% deaf to only 15%. But it costed 50k! She claims it's worth it.

Anyway, it REALLY MATTERS how loud the speakers are, their quality, how far away your head is to them, and whether you are directly centered between the two. Only way to be even close is via headphones.
I watched it with headphones on, and couldn't hear anything over 4000. I think these headphones suck, because I've never had hearing issues, other than when my wife wants me to do something.

Guys, this is a neat demo but almost worthless for anything besides demonstrating "loudness" contours.
E.g. notice hoe the sound actually gets louder as you move up, then gets softer, that's b/c your ear, and brain, naturally amplifies specific frequencies over others. Technically all the waves are the same amplitude.

I could just turn up the volume and hear the higher frequencies when I couldn't at a lower volume.

Regardless there is a distinct difference in what I can hear by plugging one ear and then the other.

Had the laptop in my lap, and speakers turned up just enough to hear it comfortable but not overly loud.

I didn't change volume between ears.

But I agree completely that it's a neat test, but is a gimmick none the less.

It does point out my difference between my ears, and that I need to see a professional about it.

laptop speakers can be all over the place when trying to get to the edges of hearing. My thinkpad is worthless at lower frequencies, but great up high. macbook is ok at both. But mostly we probably all did too much dumb stuff when we were younger without hearing protection.

Also possibly your PC sound card sucks. Especially if its a laptop.

Probably both. It has a Bang and Olafson "system" which is probably just an extra charge for regular speakers with a foreign name. Whatever, it's a company laptop.

You know what's funny is you old ladies have nothing better to talk about other then hearing aids. Damn I miss the troll train but I'm on thin ice wooooo.

I didn't pick it up on my right ear till 350hz, lost it 9500hz,. Way to much gunfire! We never wore ear plugs in country or in the sandbox, or even at the granted ranges. Paying for it now, I have learned to point my left side at people when trying to understand them.
Va has offered hearing aids but I just haven't done it.

Worked in a saw mill from the time I could walk to I was 20 not blaming anyone. The doctors say that I have 50percent hearing loss little do they know I just have selective hearing.

I can't hear nuthin much when the welding lab is rockin at school. Some of my students get pretty annoyed. I had one ear cut open and layed on my face while they cut out a cyst growing into my inner ear off my eardrum. Suppossedly not uncommon. It's constantly all squeaky inside now. Better than the nuralogical mess it was causing. I called it lightning in my head, doctor called it trigeminal nuralgia...aka a suicide disease.
I've had 2 sets of tubes and even slits ( says mom) or something as a child. Always had bad ears.
Loud music, guns, and constant infections. Huh?

Hearing aids can make a huge difference in the everyday quality of life for a hearing impaired person. If you, or someone you know, ever has trouble hearing sounds that others seem to hear get tested by an audiologist ASAP!

My loss came from flight deck ops in the Navy and front row seats at The Who, Led Zepplin, etc. In retrospect I wish I had gotten help earlier, I missed a lot in my kids growing up. I was concerned about the cost but while they can be expensive a good pair is worth it IMO.

Most places will test you for free. They make money when you buy. My first pair was from COSTCO, $2800 for the pair. You don't have to be a COSTCO member to use the hearing aid or pharmacy departments. My experience is that the quality of service can vary widely in the audiology profession, especially at COSTCO. Take the time to shop around and find someone you like and trust. My second pair were $5000 for the pair and were the latest technology and came from a local audiologist. My audiologist from COSTCO had left the company so I did the shopping around mentioned above and found what I wanted in product, cost and service. I

Help is available for those that need it, if at first you don't succeed try again, don't wait like I did, your family, friends and employer will thank you, your quality of life will be better.

Back in the 90's when I had a real job the OSHA people would come around w their lil trailer and test your hearing.Dude puts the ear phones on me and shuts me up in the big refrigerator.I start listening for the beeps, left hand, right hand, left hand, right hand, then dude opens the door and says "Sir we haven't started the test yet"
